The reserves crashed to their first defeat of the season as they let a
half-time lead slip against Maidenhead, who thus gained a second victory in
two nights over the Woods. Just 24 hours after the first-team had lost a
Southern League game 2-0 at York Road, the Magpies made the return journey
to Chestnut Avenue looking for their first Capital League points. The side started well enough and took the lead after just five minutes. Matthews slid a free-kick across to Norman, who took aim from 20 yards and fired just inside the post with the 'keeper flailing. Maidenhead had some experience out themselves with a striker force of Adrian Allen and Brian Haule, and they looked dangerous from set pieces with their height advantage. Former Woods striker Eric Kwakye was also in their side, playing on the right side of midfield. But Northwood goalkeeper David Jones was having a solid game in goal and made a couple of excellent saves from Allen and the lead remained intact to half-time. After the break, the Woods were to rue missed chances as Dave Nolan skied an easy chance and substitute Liam O'Keefe, fresh from a hat-trick for the third-team, hit the post with his shot on goal. Things then began to go wrong as a mistake from Norman allowed Brian Haule in to level and then Norman completed scoring at both ends to give the Magpies the lead. The visitors then completed the scoring with a third goal to go home with all three points. |
