Following the weekend’s 2-0 success at Ashford Town (Middlesex) which took their winning run to three games, the Woods went into their clash with Egham Town with plenty of confidence behind them.

But they got off to the worst possible start when Ryan Parsons curled in a good ball which Gareth Chendlik flicked on with a deft glance of the head and the ball flew across and crept in just inside the far post.

Ryan Debattista, playing against a former club, looked keen to make an impression and, picking up a good ball from Luke Heneghan, fired for the near-post where ex-Northwood keeper James Reading made a good save.

Chendlik was offside when he missed a glorious chance to score again after 20 minutes following a good ball from Brendan Matthew but the Woods started to threaten in the final third of the half. Debattista got in a good header to a Louis Stead cross with Reading pushing the ball onto the crossbar and it bounced kindly back into his grateful arms.

Another fine move started by Heneghan, saw Louis Bircham cross for Debattista again and Reading was again equal to his close-range effort, pulling off an excellent save. There was a bit of a scare soon after this as a poor clearance from James Burgess was latched onto by Chendlik who tried a first-time effort from distance which rolled just past the far post.

But just before the break Bircham broke quickly and found Debattista whose shot appeared to lack the power to beat Reading who then blotted his otherwise exemplary copybook by allowing the ball through his dive and in for an equaliser.

The second half was only a minute old when Egham were awarded a penalty as Chendlik went down dubiously under a challenge from James Budden. Bajram Pashaj put Egham back in front from the spot-kick.

But it was just five minutes later that the Woods levelled again with Heneghan again the instigator as he raced down the right and sent over an excellent cross which Egham midfielder Wes Daly could only slide into his own net as he tried to cut it out.

The game remained end-to-end with the occasional flashpoint. Debattista went close for the Woods, while Myles Stephenson missed two great chances from headers. Meanwhile, at the other end there were a couple of efforts scrambled of the line but a resolute Woods defence while another former Northwood striker Peter Dean hit a post before James Burgess scrambled the ball clear.

With two minutes to go, the visitors had the best opportunity to take all three points as Matthew got past Montel Joseph but then, from an angle, shot wide of the open goal.
