YEADING TOP THE WOODS IN GOAL BONANZA
YEADING 5 NORTHWOOD 4

This Middlesex League game at Brookside had everything. Goals, determination, thrills, skill and then just before the end Yeading's Glyn “Popeye” Lewis was harshly sent off for a tackle.

But Yeading looked to have thrown the game away in the opening minutes when defender Brian Martin scored two own goals. The first came after .ten minutes when he was put under pressure by Martin Ellis and hammered a back-pass into the roof of the net from 20 yards. The second arrived when Martin’s header from a Livingstone cross tragically flew into his own net.

More tragedy was to follow when Northwood’s Barry Gould was carried off with a cartilage injury, and from then on Yeading took control. They pulled one goal back with a gift in the 27th minute. Northwood goalkeeper Currell was penalised for taking too many steps, and Ray Hollingsworth’s weakly hit free kick trickled home through Currell’s hands.

Then a fine solo goal by Sid Frape put the teams level, but Yeading's joy was short-lived when a terrible mix-up between Jarrett, and Thomson presented Ellis with the chance for his 14th goal of the season.

The pace never slackened after the break, and Yeading deservedly equalised after 54 minutes. A fine run by Langridge and a perfect pass to Hollingsworth saw the Yeading striker take on two defenders in the box, and score with a low drive.

Play swung from end to end, with Thomson and Martin now playing superbly at the back for Yeading, and Hollingsworth got his hat-trick in the 76th minute. Kenny Martin was pulled down just outside the box, and Hollingsworth rocketed home the free-kick.

Then it was Robin Tidd's turn for misery as he turned a Kenny Martin corner into his own net to make it 5-3, before Paddy Coburn scored with a header for the Woods.

Two minutes from time Lewis got his marching orders for a tackle on King.

Northwood: Currell; Heslop, Gould (Ashley), Merison, Harman, Tidd, King, Coburn, Livingstone, Ellis. G. Jones.
