WOODS RETURN FOR SIX-GOAL FEAST
BARNES 2  NORTHWOOD 6

Barnes really is Northwood’s happy hunting ground. Earlier this month the Woods scored seven there in the Middlesex League Cup, and they nearly repeated the feat in this League game.

Northwood were allowed acres of space as Barnes attempted to play open football, and the Woods’ midfield threesome moved relentlessly on the home team’s defence.

The whole Northwood team showed an appetite for the ball which has been missing in recent weeks, and in particular the strikers looked a lot more sharper than they have in a long time.

Woods took the lead in the 15th minute when a shot rebounded to Clarke, who rifled home a low drive from the edge of the box.  Within minute the Woods went further ahead when Stone won the ball with a well-judged leap, and Cooper ended his lean spell with the final touch.

The overlapping Harland was always a constant threat to the Barnes defence. He broke away down the right on a number of runs, and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.

Stone scored Northwood’s third when he rushed the ball into the net after a header from Gould had rebounded from the crossbar.

At the start of the second half Barnes made an effort to get back into the game but their adventurous play left them very weak at the back. Cooper broke away on the right, Stone dummied the cross and Clarke was on hand to score from ten yards.

Northwood now pushed forwards in numbers, and Murphy tried to get on the scoresheet on his first team debut with several bursts forward. Barnes pulled one goal back, but Pearce, having missed one good chance, soon restored the lead to 5-1, and then substitute Roberts immediately made his presence felt when he struck the bar with a good shot.

The home team pulled back another goal, but when Clarke had a magnificent free-kick headed off the line, Stone showed great skill to control, swivel and volley into the net.

Northwood: Kessell, Harland, Mills, Gould, Murphy, Harman, Franklin, Pearce, Clarke, Stone, Cooper, sub. Roberts.
