WOODS WORTH A POINT
NORTH GREENFORD 3 NORTHWOOD 1

Northwood took a much-changed team to the improving North Greenford, who hammered Middlesex League champions Yeading 6-0 seven days earlier. And although the Woods lost, the score flattered then home side, and Woods manager John Myers was pleased by the effort and enthusiasm of the new boys.

Dropped were skipper Barry Gould, Rob Stevens, Brian Taylor and Andrew  Pirie, and in came Ken Harland and Mick Blanch in defence. Harry Coulter and Jimmy Vincent reinvigorated the attack.

With the new faces, Northwood took time to settle, and early in the game found themselves one goal down after a goalmouth scramble. They were quick to retaliate, and new signing Coulter latched onto a through ball to send an angled drive into the net from 15 yards for the equaliser.

Their joy was short-lived. North Greenford regained the initiative and the lead within minutes when Farrell netted with a well-angled drive. North Greenford held the reins for most of the first half, but were kept to that lead at the interval.

In the second half Northwood took the controls, and with Coulter and Dave Metcalfe outstanding up front, the home defence was stretched.

Byrne was just off target with a  firm header and Vincent saw his shot cleared off the line as Northwood enjoyed their nest spell of football for some time.

Then, with just ten minutes left, Northwood were caught flat-footed with nine men up, and Farrell took a  breakaway goal for North Greenford to sink Woods’ chances, although they did enough to earn a point.
