LAST KICK METCALFE SAVES DAY
NORTHWOOD 1  MILL END 1

A last-kick goal by Dave Metcalfe gave Northwood a Middlesex League point from Saturday’s game with Mill End. And Northwood fully deserved to share the honours after having two good penalty appeals turned down, while their goalkeeper Gillon saved a Mill End spot kick.

Gillon’s penalty save came in the second half, soon after Northwood had conceded Miller’s goal. They were shaken but Gillon’s great save settled their nerves, and they went confidently in search of an equaliser.

Coulter, on as substitute, went close, and skipper Hester clipped the Mill End crossbar. Woods were in control in midfield but out of luck up front. Stone rose well to send a firm header goalwards, only for a defender to claw the ball off the line with the referee unsighted.

In the first half, Stone was denied an even more obvious penalty when he was brought down as he broke through.

Pearce and Metcalfe kept plugging away as Northwood sought their equaliser, but with time running out things started to look bleak.

Then, with the last kick, Metcalfe latched onto the ball in a goalmouth scramble and lashed in the equaliser.

Manager John Myers was pleased with the Northwood performance, particularly that of youth player John Harman. They also played without Mick Blanch and new signing Norman Heslop. This caused a reshuffle in the Northwood defence, with Hester in the back four and Harman at left back.

Northwood: M. Gillon, K. Harland, J. Byrne, C Hester, J. Harman, P. Clarke, J. Roberts, K. Wilford, S. Pearce, H. Stone, B. Metcalfe, Sub: H. Coulter.
