WOODS DEFENCE A SHAMBLES
HAM 3 NORTHWOOD 1
Northwood’s prospects of winning the premier division of the Middlesex League took a battering on Saturday when they lost to a tough Ham side against the run of play.
Northwood should have been comfortable winners, yet their defence let them down in the second half. The visitors dominated the first half on a pitch as hard as concrete.
They maintained an almost continual stream of attacks, and only good luck kept Ham in the game.
Northwood came pretty close from a free kick after Ian Harvey had been tripped deep in Ham territory. His shot hit the underside of the crossbar and was somehow cleared.
After a scoreless first half Northwood continued their superiority into the second spell.
Then with 19 minutes remaining a wild shot hit Northwood's Myers and was deflected past keeper Byrne into their goal.
The death knock came soon after when Pearce lost the ball and Ham nipped in to go further ahead.
Steve Senior replied with fine shot from 20 yards to cut the deficit.
However, another defensive error late in the game put Ham in an unassailable position.
Northwood: R. Byrne, D. Dibbens, J. Myers, B. Gould, B. Taylor, W. Burt, S. Pearce, I. Harvey, S. Senior, B. Wanless, P. Coburn.
