NORTHWOOD THE CUP SUCKERS
NORTHWOOD 2 ACTON BRITISH LEGION 5
Northwood were the fall guys of a Middlesex Intermediate Cup upset on Saturday, when the confidence gained in a successful two-month run was shattered by Acton British Legion’s big win.
Woods, scorers of 34 goals in the previous six games, were settling down nicely when a bad goalkeeping error found them adrift to a 30-yard shot.
Still, they shook themselves into action and piled on the pressure, forced countless corners and hit the woodwork twice before Ian Harvey landed a penalty for handball.
With Acton relying on two men up front, Northwood should have been well in control but this twin spearhead was causing trouble and Dillon. the centre forward and a mountain of a man, displayed football skills of a player half his size.
Acton soon went back into the lead and with Woods' front-three sadly out of salts, it was Acton who called the tune. Two more goals went past Bowden before Senior pulled another one back for Woods, but by then it was too late.
Acton managed to snap up nearly every chance that came their way, and Northwood, in spite of 75 per cent of the play, were the day's cup suckers.
Northwood: D. Bowden, G. Harding, P. Madigan, W. Burt, B. Taylor, I. Harvey, B. Gould, S. Pearce, P. Coburn, B. Wanless, S. Senior.
