NORTHWOOD’s CUP REVENGE
VIKING SPORTS 0  NORTHWOOD 2

Northwood advanced into the quarter-finals of the Middlesex Intermediate Cup when they defeated their top of the Middlesex League rivals Viking Sports at Ealing on Saturday.

In a recent League Cup game, Viking triumphed, but Northwood gained their revenge in a dour struggle. The Woods had just the start they wanted when Byrne intercepted the keeper’s clearance and pushed the ball into the net.

The small pitch and heavy conditions did not make for good football, but both teams produced some reasonable soccer as play swung from end to end.

In the first half Northwood had the slope in their favour, but were unable to capitalise on this apart from their early goal.

Nevertheless, Viking could count themselves to be lucky to be just a goal down, as first Dodd and then Horsford went close for Northwood.

Northwood had far more chances in the second half as Viking left gaps at the back in their efforts to grab an equaliser.

Dodd had a shot blocked with only the keeper to beat, and both Horsford and Gould went close with headers.
Harvey had another excellent game in midfield, and his partnership with Gould continues to flourish.

It was indeed apt that Harvey should score Woods’ second goal in the dying minutes. A long ball from Madigan was nodded down by Byrne, and Harvey ran in on the blind side to volley a great goal.

Northwood: R. Byrne, G, Harding, P. Bailey,  B. Gould, P. Madigan,  D. Dibbens, R. Dodd, S. Pearce, P. Byrne, I. Harvey, D. Horsford.
