SQUAD PROFILES FROM 1990

ALAN MERISON - Manager
Appointed in 1988 after cutting his managerial teeth with Harrow Borough's Suburban League side, Alan, a successful former Woods skipper, set about transforming Northwood into a successful side. The Woods have already established a name for playing attractive football.
KEN LAVENDER - Goalkeeper
Joined the Woods during the Summer of 1988 having had previous experience at Kingsbury, Wealdstone, Southall, Harefield United, Woking, Queens Park Rangers, Harrow Borough and Chesham United. Vastly accomplished and has been a regular in the side since the retirement of long-serving John Toogood.
MICK DEVLIN - Defender
Defender Mick joined Northwood at the start of last season, and has held a regular spot in the side since.
PAUL CURRAN - Defender
Paul joined the Woods in December 1988 and has hardly missed a game since. He was a steadying influence in the heart of the defence but has been converted to left-back in recent months where he has been equally effective. He has been an ever-present this season. Previously with Kingsbury, Hendon and Finchley, Paul is not renowned for his goalscoring prowess with just two goals in 133 appearances. A member of Northwood's 1990 Cup winning side.
LEE RANDALL - Defender
Defender Lee joined Northwood two seasons ago, but has only made himself a regular during the current campaign.
STEVE PATTISON - Midfielder
Signed this season, Steve has been an invaluable squad member, making a handful of appearances so far.
JEREMY BILLINS – Midfielder
Jeremy joined the Woods in January this year, but still seeking a regular place in the squad.
TIM VINCENT – Midfielder
A vastly experienced player who has been invaluable to Northwood since joining last summer having had previous experience at Southall, Harrow Borough, Maidenhead, Uxbridge, Ruislip Manor and Chalfont St Peter amongst others.
DAVID NOLAN – Midfielder
Teenager David has come through the ranks at Northwood, but is yet to establish a place in the side, though he looks to have a great future
GREG PHILLIPS – Midfielder
Greg joined the club from Wembley in April 1989, and has played a vital part of the club's successes this season in league and league cup.
STEWART BALDWIN – Midfielder
Tough-tackling defender or midfield player Stewart played for Edgware Town and Southall before joining the Woods in 1986. He returned to Edgware but started a second spell at Northwood in February 1990.
MARK THOMAS - Striker
Local lad Mark came through the club’s youth ranks, before joining Rayners Lane. He then returned to the Woods in 1985, winning a regular place up front, once bagging a hat-trick in a League Cup win over Catford Wanderers.
GARFIELD BLACKMAN - Striker
Garfield has been a regular in the Woods side since making his debut in March 1988 and has now made 99 appearances. A regular goalscorer, he also has Middlesex County representative honours to his credit.
HENRY PACQUETTE - Striker
Henry joined the Woods in the summer of 1988 and he scored on his debut in a 3-2 victory at Southgate Athletic. He had previously played for the likes of Harrow Borough, Hendon, Boreham Wood, Wembley, Slough Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Tooting & Mitcham, Wokingham and Cheshunt and has already scored nearly 50 goals for Northwood.

THE MATCH REPORT

A dramatic last minute own goal saw Northwood win the Greene King Spartan League Cup on Friday to gain same compensation for missing out on the big prize – the league title. An equaliser in the last minute of normal time, which ricocheted off the back of an opponent, set the Woods on their way to a superb 3-1 win over Cheshunt at Hanwell.

The Woods, pipped to the post by Edgware in the championship race two days earlier, seemed jinxed when they trailed 1-0 with 89 minutes gone.

But the side showed superb powers of recovery to snatch an equaliser with the crowd already streaming home.
Lee Randall swung over a lethal cross which was dropped by the goalkeeper. A Cheshunt defender attempted to clear but only succeeded in hitting the ball against the back of a colleague and into his own net (pictured left).

It was no more than Northwood deserved, after totally dominating the first half and playing the better football throughout.

In extra time there was only one side in it and, when Garfield Blackman was brought down in full flight, Steve Patterson sent a superb free-kick into the net.

Blackman was hacked again a few minutes later, and this time Greg Phillips stepped up to put Woods 3-1 ahead from the penalty spot.

Said manager Alan Merison: "It’s a wonderful feeling and I think everyone at the club deserves the success. It would have been a travesty if we finished the season with nothing after all the hard work put in the players, board and management. The lads were feeling low after Edgware snatched the title, but we are off to Spain for a tour on Saturday and I think there could be a few celebrations in store.”

Cheshunt went ahead soon after the break, following a series of defensive errors, though substitute Henry Pacquette livened up the attack.
