LEGION AND NORTHWOOD IN CUP DEADLOCK
HILLINGDON B.L. 0 NORTHWOOD 0
No quarter was asked or given in this furious Middlesex League Challenge Cup semi-final tie. Right from the start some stern Northwood tackled warned the Legion that this was not to be a game fir the faint-hearted.
Legion replied with some sharp work in the Northwood box, which saw keeper Russell having to make important saves from Steve Burkett and Mick Frost. After this initial flourish, though, legion began to fade and Northwood, with Robin Tidd at his scheming best, started an all-out assault on Legion's goal.
Against them however, was Legion full-back Dave McCarthy, who was having his best game of the season, along with a very determined set of fellow-defenders.
However, they could not stop Northwood going close on three occasions. In the first, Gary Cooper headed in a rebound but was adjudged to have fouled McCarthy, then Barry Gould had a header cleared off the line by Chris Harlock, before Pearce fired in a drive of such venom that it left the crossbar shivering for several moments.
Legion responded, and Frost sent a header just past the post, and there we
re further chances at both ends, but the draw looked inevitable long before the final whistle, and so it proved.
Northwood: Russell, Mills, Hammond, Gould, Presswell, Tidd, Pearce, Coburn, Cooper, McGowan, Jones.
