Aylesbury took the point that they needed to ensure their participation in the end of season lottery that are the play-offs as the Woods held on to their sixth goalless draw of the season in a game where there were an extraordinary amount of siblings involved. While the Woods included the two Ehui brothers and two Hastings’ brothers, they were denied the Burgess twins as Mark Burgess started his late season suspension. However, the Moles could almost match that with Brian and Davis Haule being joined by Aston & Lynton Goss in their starting line-up.

It was no real surprise that the visitors started on the front foot with Northwood goalkeeper Berkley Laurencin soon called into action, saving low down from a Lynton Goss effort but general the Woods defence held strong with Steve Brown the lynch-pin of an unfamiliar three-man defence which included Omar Vassell and Andy Lomas.

But on 16 minutes Lynton Goss managed to get ahead of the defence and race into the box only to be denied by the imposing figure of Laurencin as he blocked as the winger shaped to shoot. Just two minutes later a cracking effort from Bradley Wadkins was pushed wide by a diving Laurencin as the pressure continued.

There was a brief respite from the onslaught a minute later as Dave Lawrence knocked in a deep cross and Ismael Ehui stretched unmarked at the far post to get in a header but he was unable to hit the target. Vassell was on hand to cut out another dangerous Lynton Goss cross and then Laurencin was on hand again to stop a half-blocked strike from Aston Goss as Aylesbury continued to attack the flanks well.

After 28 minutes though the Woods had a good chance to snatch an unlikely lead as a good ball from Michael Murray found Dave Lawrence in space but he smacked his shot straight at goalkeeper James Weatherill who saved low down.

Back came the Moles again though and it needed some solid defending to keep them out as half-time approached. First Rob Hastings did well to get a block in on a Brian Haule strike that took the pace of it and allowed Laurencin to save comfortably. Then Brown did likewise to stop a Wadkins shot and when the ball ran on to Davis Haule, the over-worked Woods ‘keeper saved again.

Just before half-time, Northwood showed that they were still a danger on the counter-attack as Lawrence sent Joakim Ehui away and when he picked out Ismael Ehui with his cross, the striker hit the target but without the direction to beat Weatherill.

There was a more even start to the second-half and then the visitors lost striker Brian Haule to injury but it seemed to galvanise them again. Lynton Goss clipped a post with a shot that flew across the face of goal and then substitute Jamie Rudd clipped a shot wide after a free-kick had been played into the box.

Mark Burgess rang the changes with Nana Asamoah and Perry Dicker introduced for the two top scorers Ismael Ehui and Michael Murray but it failed to stop the momentum as Rudd spurned another opportunity sweeping another shot against the post after a good centre.

The introduction of George Nicholas for Joakim Ehui on 74 minutes finally saw the Woods begin to create a bit more in midfield and Lawrence saw a free-kick deflected wide two minutes later. From the resulting corner the ball was cleared to Rob Hastings who fired a shot low through a ruck of players but also just wide of the goal.
The home side’s best chance to snatch all three points came on 83 minutes as Niko Muir played a neat ball off to Dicker who hit a great strike that had Weatherill moving to his left to push the ball over the bar.

Aylesbury seemed to have settled for their point and the only other goalmouth action came in the final minute of the game as Lomas knocked in an excellent free-kick and Brown got in a solid header but it was always just over the bar.
