Woods face Slough on opening day

They have been a long time coming, but the fixtures for the new Calor Southern League season were released this morning, and they see Northwood travel to Slough Town on the opening day, Saturday 17th August - in a repeat of last term's seasonal opener.

Newly promoted Dunstable Town are the first visitors to Chestnut Avenue, on Tuesday 20th August, and the opening week is completed by a visit from Daventry Town.

The holiday fixtures see North Greenford at Chestnut Avenue on Boxing Day, whilst Woods visit Potters Bar on New Year's Day, and the same side are the final visitors of the season to Northwood on Easter Monday, 21st April. The full fixture list is here.

Victory in first friendly

A 35th minute strike from Garry Senior was sufficient to give a Woods eleven victory in their first pre-season friendly this afternoon, away to Bedfont & Feltham of the Combined Counties League.

Manager Mark Burgess took a mixed squad to the game, comprised of some established first team players and a number of trialists, and it proved to be a good workout despite the afternoon's heat.

Northwood's squad for the game was: James Reading, Garry Malone, Danny McDonnell, Ryan Phillips, Steve Brown, Brad Hewitt, Mark Burgess, Niko Muir, Dave Lawrence, Garry Senior, Craig White, Luke Wells plus a number of triallists.

Next up is a match against Southall of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One next Saturday.

Fixtures are one week away

The players are back in training, pre-season friendlies are about to commence - and in one week's time we will finally have the Calor League fixtures. The season's league schedule will be released on 17th July, when you can find all the details at northwoodfc.com.

The F.A. Appeal Board last week confirmed the moves of Guildford City and Godalming Town to the South & West Division, although both clubs were awarded a "significant" sum of compensation to mitigate the economic factors involved.

The draw for the Red Insure League Cup sees the Woods play away to Ashford Town in the second round - the fourth season running that the two clubs have met in the competition!

FA competitions draws released

As the build-up to the new season continues, the draws for the early rounds of the Football Association competitions were released this morning.

The Woods have received a home draw in the FA Cup with Budweiser by being given a Preliminary Round tie at Northwood Park against London Colney or AFC Rushden & Diamonds, both being clubs that Woods have not met previously. The winners of that game will play away to one of Spartan South Midlands League quartet Cockfosters, Hanwell Town, Hadley or Oxhey Jets in the First Qualifying Round.

This is the 133rd FA Cup competition - but the 25th season that Northwood have competed in it, starting with a defeat by Hampton in August 1989.

In the Preliminary Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy, Northwood host league rivals AFC Hayes - with a First Qualifying Round trip to Redbridge or Chatham Town the prize for the winners. The FA Youth Cup sees Woods play Enfield Town at Northwood Park in the Preliminary Round; the winners playing away to Harefield United.

Pre-season starts on Thursday

As the new campaign gets closer, the Woods' management and players are preparing for the start of pre-season training later this week. Mark Burgess and his squad commence their work on Thursday evening - but it should be emphasised that attendance is by invitation only; anyone who turns up uninvited will be turned away.

Most of the squad who finished the last campaign at Northwood are expected to return; many have already indicated that they will be back, although two or three will be seeking pastures new. Also missing will be Scott Raper, of whom Mark Burgess said: “Scott is off backpacking and will be a big loss to the side, but we wish him well and he knows he will be welcomed back after his travels.”

The first friendlies are against Bedfont & Feltham on Saturday 13th July and Southall seven days later.
