Wingate & Finchley came to Chestnut Avenue off the back of a 12-1 FA Youth Cup win against Bedfont Sports and a 3-2 victory against Staines Town, and it was easy to see why they must be one of the favourites for the title this season. Solid in every position, physically strong and fast going forward, they gave our lads a difficult evening.

The first half was very much one of two halves, with Wingate strong early on but Northwood coming back well as the half came to an end. Great saves and great defending for the first half-hour saw Woods’ hopes rising. As half-time approached Northwood had several chances, culminating with them hitting a post in the 44th minute.

Reaching half time at 0-0 was quite an achievement given what had gone before. Three bookings in the first half were clearly a sign of things to come, and right from the start of the second half Wingate were aggressive all over the park.

Within three minutes of the restart an injury to Eric Nyarko – who was outstanding throughout – saw Wingate take the lead in the 48th minute. Northwood were now penned in and a second goal was not far away.

With two of our players injured, Richard Elderfield introduced two substitutes on the hour, but almost immediately Wingate took advantage of lack of organization with a second goal. Wingate were now in total control. and had two further goals disallowed for offside.

A third substitution made little difference, and Wingate made it 3-0 with fifteen minutes to go. Two further goals in the closing stages saw Wingate run out 5-0 winners. Sometimes in life you just have to admit the opposition was stronger, and this was clearly one of those occasions.
