Unbeaten League leaders Staines Town secured the West Division title with this solid victory over a battling Northwood side who have lost their way a little at the business end of the season.

The loss of centre-half Sean Hollowed with a leg problem at a key time has been hard to overcome, together with a week’s suspension for star striker Romaine Walker but they will still reflect on the season with plenty of satisfaction.

The Woods started well and were first to record an effort on goal as Jack Hutchinson got on the end of an excellent cross from Gbenga Adelana but he was denied by the goalkeeper.
Staines were soon on top though and after 14 minutes, Adelana tripped an overlapping full-back just inside the box and conceded a penalty. Mario Quiassaca gratefully accepted the chance to put his side in front by beating Chezney Cassell from twelve yards. The Staines striker has been vying with Northwood’s Walker as the League’s top scorer for much of the season, and he looked hungry for goals when just four minutes later he latched onto a flick-on and held off a challenge to knock in a second.

It was a huge setback for the Woods but they set about trying to get back into the game, and Richard Amofa went close with a free-kick before they did pull a goal back on 35 minutes. Some good work on the right led to a cross from Julian Smith and Walker rose high to head neatly under the crossbar.

It was a good spell for Walker as he had another good strike well saved and also had another chance with a header but this time he steered his effort wide. In reply, Quiassaca got on the end of a free-kick but he was denied by Cassell who made a good stop. The Woods worked really hard after the break with the best chance falling to Smith, after a lay-off by Walker, but he skied his shot over the crossbar.

It was after 70 minutes that the Swans grabbed the goal that restored their two-goal advantage and allowed them to breathe a little easier. A long-ball released Quiassaca and he showed great composure to bury his shot past the exposed Cassell.

It proved enough for the visitors as despite the Woods strengthening their attacking prowess with the introduction of Nathan McLeod and Jordan Douglas as substitutes, they were thwarted by some solid Staines defending and there were no further clear-cut chances for the home side.

Northwood will now attempt to hold on to third place in the table when they play their final two matches, both at home, on the next two Thursday night’s. They take on Fleet Town next week and then finish against Barnet.
