The Woods put up an excellent fight in their inaugural Isthmian Youth Cup fixture on Monday evening, but eventually bowed out on penalties to Boreham Wood.

The visitors had enjoyed a long run in the FA Youth Cup that only ended when losing 1-5 to Swansea City last week, so a tough game was expected for the Northwood side who had won their last six matches.

It was the Woods who went ahead when Jamie Tompkins notched the opening goal after 20 minutes but Boreham Wood came back strongly and levelled after 35 minutes through Tom Nicholas.

Just eight minutes into the second-half, Jon Clements made it 2-1 to our opponents but that triggered a gallant fight-back from the Woods.

That was rewarded ten minutes from the end of normal time when Jack Bennett scored with a cracking volley and the match went into extra-time.

The extra thirty minutes failed to separate the two sides and it went to penalties.

Boreham Wood went first and kept the advantage to 3-3 with Chris Michael, Jack Bennett and Jamie Tompkins all scoring for the Woods. After the visitors made it 4-3, Aiden Lynam then saw his spot-kick saved by Daniel Lewis and skipper Shane Bambridge fired home the winner for our opponents.

Boreham Wood now play away at Harrow Borough in the Second Round.
