  REPORT by Alan Evans

The Woods were looking to build on their weekend victory over Barton Rovers against struggling Aylesbury but the heavy pitch was never likely to produce a classic match and it didn’t make for great entertainment.

It was the home side that created the first real chance of the match as Jamie West was put through on goal but goalkeeper Montel Joseph made a good save to keep his shot out. The Woods keeper had to be alert again shortly afterwards to block another West effort to his near post.

Louis Bircham was through on goal when clipped by Daniel Gordon for a free-kick on the edge of the box but it was just a yellow card for the Moles player-manager and the free-kick was wasted. Joakim Ehui had a cross well cut out by Aylesbury goalkeeper Ashley Jenkins who then also got down well to keep out a strike from distance from Callum Wright.

Wright had another effort deflected wide for a corner after some good work from Bircham and Ryan Debattista had an effort that slipped wide of the post as the Woods the first-half.

The visitors continued to threaten after the break with Bircham and Ehui both having early efforts saved but their best chance to take the lead came on 68 minutes as a good ball from Luke Heneghan put Bircham through on goal. It needed a burst of pace to take him past Jenkins but he was caught in two minds and it allowed the ‘keeper to make a block tackle and the ball was cleared to safety.

But it was Aylesbury who took a shock lead after 83 minutes as a free-kick was pumped in towards the far post and when the defence failed to clear it was defender Jordan Jenkins who forced it home to make it 1-0 with just seven minutes left.

But the Moles gave it away five minutes later as James Budden was clearly pushed as the ball was delivered into the box and Heneghan gratefully tucked away the spot-kick.

Two minutes into stoppage-time, Northwood almost grabbed all three points as Alex Nolan produced a great run down the right and knocked in a cross that Wright met on the volley but Jenkins made an excellent save to keep his side level.
