Saturday 22nd January 1972
NORTHWOOD ACE SIGNS OFF IN STYLE
NORTHWOOD 2  NORTH GREENFORD 0

After another scintillating performance from Paddy Coburn on Saturday to put them top of the League table, Northwood will have to do without his services over the next two weeks. It was Coburn's creative brilliance that set up Northwood’s 14th  win in their last 15 league matches.

Just three minutes before half-time Coburn was on hand to put Northwood into the lead. Following some neat work on the right by Coburn and Steve Senior, the ball was centred to Ian Harvey, who volleyed a great left foot shoot goalwards. When the Greenford failed to gather the ball properly Coburn swooped in to put the ball in the net.

Then with 15 minutes from full time the mighty Coburn paved the way for the second. Receiving the ball on the halfway line, he showed strength and skill as he ploughed past man after man. When his thundering shot bounced out of the keeper’s hands, Senior was on hand to head the ball home.

The title race now seems to be boiling down to a struggle between Northwood and Yeading. Northwood will just be hoping that they can cope without Coburn for their nest couple games.

The Woods had the better of the early exchanges on a heavy pitch without creating any chances, whereas Greenford never looked likely to penetrate the vastly improved Northwood defence. John Myers was again outstanding, and his confidence spread throughout the back four. However, Coburn was without doubt the star of the match, well supported by Senior and Barry Wanless.

Northwood: R. Byrne, G. Harding, J Myers, B. Taylor, I. Harvey, W. Burt, B. Gould, S. Pearce, S. Senior, B. Wanless, P. Coburn.
