Match Reports 2011-12

17th Mar. 2012:  Northwood Red 8  Pinnstars 1

We changed the day of this game from Sunday to Saturday due to Mother's Day, and this was the first time kicking off on a Saturday for a couple of years. Unfortunately, being a Saturday we lost five first team players for one reason or another, but it gave the opportunity for some of the players normally starting as a sub to show exactly what they could do.
Woods got off to a fantastic start after a few minutes, with a Michael Foster shot hitting the back of the net from 30 yards. Minutes later after a through ball from Pearse White left Michael sprinting clear and finishing clinically to get his second. It wasn’t all Northwood, though, and Pinnstars created chances of their own, with our new-look defence holding firm, and Joe Osbourne making a terrific save to keep the score at 2-0.
Joe Slocombe went on a solo run which saw him make it 3-0 after 20 minutes. William bagged his first on 25 minutes to make it 4-0 again after being released by Pearse, dummying his shot one way and then pushing the ball past the keeper into the far corner of the net. It was 5-0 shortly before half time. Some excellent passing and movement left Michael Foster clear on the right and from an acute angle buried the ball into the far corner.
Pinnstars responded after the break and created some good chances of their own, and were unlucky not to score when their number 10, who had a very good game, hit the bar with a cracking shot. The follow up was cleared and from several resulting corners Northwood just escaped conceding with some good defending.
Pearse White captained Northwood for the first time, in the absence of Louis Moriarty, and gave an excellent performance, with accurate passing to supply our forwards with the ammunition needed to get behind the Pinnstars defence. Again a Pearse through ball left Michael clear to score his 4th, and Northwood's sixth. Shortly afterwards, the Woods made it 7–0 when Pearse scored after Pinnstars failed to clear a cross from Michael Foster. Pinnstars got one back when their number 10 broke clear, beating several Northwood defenders and shooting past Joe Osbourne. The scoring finished - to make it 8-1 - after some nice possession football ended with William Jones sprinting clear and finishing again into the opposite corner, giving their keeper no chance.

11th Mar. 2012:  Northwood 3 Wealdstone 0

This was one of the best games of the season, against a very good opponent, and was played at such a fast pace, with some excellent football played by both teams. Woods got a good start, going close after only a few minutes, a Louie Lewinson long throw to the back post where Michael just missed with his head, the ball dropped onto the foot of Pearse, but he just screwed it wide of the post. We went 1-0 up shortly after a good passing move ended with Michael Foster shooting low and hard into the corner of the net.
Shortly after a Louis Moriarty through pass released Louie Lewinson, whose one on one with the keeper ended with their keeper making an excellent save. Wealdstone hit the post with a magnificent shot, with possibly their first chance of the half after about 20 minutes. Our midfield trio of Pearse White, Joe Heppelthwaite And Louis Moriarty tackled and harassed the Wealdstone midfield, limiting their threat to just a few chances. Joe Osbourne made a fantastic save to thwart Wealdstone shortly before the break.
The second half saw Wealdstone up the tempo even more, our defence who played very well throughout, Andrew, Hassan Kailan and James came under more and more pressure as we conceded much of the early second half possession, again the midfield worked tirelessly to ensure we competed for every single ball.
We went 2-0 up after Louis Moriarty corner was cleared, Louis M found Louie Lewinson on the edge of the box, whose shot was deflected of a defender and into the net. Wealdstone replied with some excellent football, creating a number of chances, which were either saved by Joe O, or shot wide. Eventually Wealdstone scored after a hint of offside, but they truly deserved a goal for their work rate in and around our box. Northwood replied immediately with Michael Foster running at their defence, releasing a tremendous shot, which came off the centre back right into William's path, whose curled shot gave the Wealdstone keeper no chance.
We worked tremendously hard to achieve this victory, but it was our superb finishing at the end of the day that won the game. It was an excellent team performance, the defence stood firm, there were great individual performances from the midfield trio of Joe Hepp, Pearse White and Louis Moriarty whose tackling and work rate were superb and were very close to the motm award, as was Michael who was a constant threat, excellent performances William, Mase, Simon and Joe O.But MOTM this week goes to Louie Lewinson.

4th Mar. 2012:  Northwood Red 9  Harvesters 1

The boys knew the importance of getting a good start in cup games, and they began with good pace and tempo using the flanks to get around a well organised Harvester defence. The quality of our football was very good, with our link play and movement creating so many chances, mainly orchestrated by Louie Lewinson. We have hit a very good vein of form and probably surprised our opponents going 3-0 up in the first 15 minutes with goals by Joe Heppelthwaite, William Jones, and Michael Foster.
We went into half time 5-0 up, having had most of the play, with further goals from Michael and a superb long range volley by Joe Heppelthwaite. The back five including defensive midfield, Louis Moriarty, defence of James Winter, Kailan Patel, Pearse White and Simon Wielgorka are our unsung heroes. They were extremely tight and never gave Harvesters any room, Joe Heppelthwaite harassed the ball player in midfield and again for the second week running our defensive hard work ensured our goalkeeper wasn’t troubled too much in the first half.
In teh second half we made some changes and continued to create chances behind the Harvesters defence. Joe H scored his hat trick, after some good pasing involving Joe Slocombe, William scored his second, Mase Leung rounded a fine display scoring his first, but the goal of the game was scored by Michael Foster after Louis Moriarty won the ball in midfield, sent William Jones through on the left, William’s pace took him past two Harvester defenders, crossing into the middle where the ball was met first time, volleyed low and hard giving Michael a superb hat trick, which rounded a great performance by Michael.
Matt Ralfs and Andrew Constanti came on and performed well for the last 20 minutes. Harvesters got a goal back, midway through the half, a well taken corner and the Harvester player striking from just outside the six yard box. Joe Slocombe was again unlucky in the final minutes after his shot was just  cleared by the defender.
Overall, this was a very good team performance, with many outstanding individual performances, but Michael Foster wins the MOTM award, not just for his goal scoring but the hard work and all round contribution to the team. Our compliments to our opponents who despite losing agreed to finish the game in driving rain, and poor conditions for the last 10 minutes.

26th Feb. 2012:  Alexandra Park 1  Northwood Red 5

This truly impressive performance by so many players made sure that Northwood went through against a good Alex Park team. We had the early advantage, going close in the first few minutes, when a great move finished with Mase Leung shooting over the bar. Louie Lewinson opened the scoring with a fantastic shot from outside the box which had the keeper beaten from the time it left his foot. We went further ahead with new boy Michael Foster scoring his first for the club within 15 minutes of his first appearance, which was an absolute scorcher of a volley giving the Alex Park keeper no chance.
Our defence was solid throughout the first half, with two holding midfielders Louis Moriarty and Joe Heppelthwaite winning all the possession and shutting down players, giving Alex Park no space to play. Half time 0-2 to Northwood.
We again started the second half the better side, and should have been three or four up, only for some fine goalkeeping to prevent the score to increase. Alex Park got one back after a fine solo run by their right winger shot past a helpless Joe Osbourne. The reaction from Northwood was immediate, as a great one-two left Louie Lewinson clear, but on this occasion he shot just wide. Louie made up  for the miss minutes later, blasting another shot into the top corner from about 25 yards to make it 1-3 and restore our two-goal advantage.
Michael Foster Joe Slocombe William Jones, Mase Leung all had chances, as Woods enjoyed the majority of the possession. With about 15 minutes left Michael once again forced a tremendous save from the AP keeper only to see Mase follow up and finish from close range. We made some changes and put Joe Heppelthwaite up front, and within minutes he obliged by scoring our fifth after some fine work by Louie. Our defending was superb throughout and gave us the platform for our success. A truly good all round squad performance.
MOTM: the whole team.

19th Feb. 2012:  Northwood Red 1 Omonia 1

This was the first game for a month due to bad weather, and we had a couple of late absentees, which meant we had to change a few things around. We started well defending the wind and the slope; our first half plan was to defend and hit Omonia on the break. The new midfield unit of Joe H and Louis M worked really well, sitting in front of the defence, limiting Omonia to a handful of half chances, yet still creating some really good chances of our own. Half time 0–0.
For some reason we thought having the slope was an excuse to drop the work rate, and unfortunately learned the hard way as Omonia took the lead. They had a spell of about five minutes where they passed well and controlled the possession. After this period it was all Northwood, with the last 20 minutes seeing us camped in their half, creating a number of really good scoring chances. After Louis Moriarty won the ball and slid the ball to William Jones out wide, his cross was met by Joe Heppelthwaite at it was 1–1.
Chance after chance was either saved by the Omonia keeper, or agonisingly slipped wide of the post, Simon had an excellent chance, only to see the save of the match from the Omonia keeper. William had a great chance sprinting clear, but a late flag for offside ruled out the possibility of the winner. A shot from Joe Slocombe in added time went agonisingly onto the post and away for a goal kick.
So at full time 1 -1, which was a very good result and a very good team performance.
MOTM: Joe Heppelthwaite

22nd Jan. 2012:  Northwood Red 1  Northwood Black 3

In our first competitive game against the black team, we started well, and would say that we had the advantage for the first 15 minutes or so. The black team defended well and started to get on top in midfield, when Louie Lewinson blasted the ball from about 30 yards into the top corner of the net. 1-0 red team.
We became slightly complacent and allowed the Black team time to pass and move, which to be fair they did very well. AJ equalised with a fine shot of his own, which beat Joe Osbourne in to the far corner. Half time 1-1.
The second half saw the red team struggle for possession, the wind did play its part, a strong headwind directly into our faces which we struggled to deal with. It was difficult to move up the pitch to mount any sort of pressure.
Our possession was poor in the second half, kicking away opportunities to move the ball, eventually the pressure told and Matt Gibbs scored to make it 1-2 after some good passing involving Henry Gibbor.
Henry scored the black team’s 3rd after a fine solo run, beating both central defenders and slotting past our keeper.
The black team deserved their victory on the day, they worked harder for possession and had a determination that we as a team lacked on the day.
MOTM: Kailan Patel

27th Nov. 2011:  Northwood Res 4  Oakhill 2

A very good second half performance maintained our great start to the season and kept our unbeaten record intact: 8 wins and 1 draw. A strong wind did affect conditions, with Oakhill having the advantage first half and scoring on 15 minutes after we failed to clear on the edge of our box. We drew level after a fine strike by Joe Slocombe. Half time 1-1.
Oakhill took the lead again early in the second half, after a good passing move left their centre forward clear. Taylor equalised, cleverly following up after a terrific cross from Mase Leung. We went close a number of times, with Louie Lewinson hitting the post and the bar, within a few minutes. Finally, Joe Heppelthwaite put us ahead for the first time in the game after racing clear and lobbing the keeper. Louie Lewinson capped a fabulous performance with an excellent strike to make it 4-2.
Apart from the goalscorers, a mention to Mase Leung, who went close on a number of occasions, and Pearse White, Andrew Constanti and Louis Moriarty, who all put in excellent performances.

20th Nov. 2011:  Harvesters 2  Northwood Red 3

Northwood red go top of the league after a hard fought away fixture at third placed Harvesters. Woods remain unbeaten this season, again thanks to a terrific first half performance. The opening 20 minutes we were in control, Joe Heppelthwaite opened the scoring after a great one-two with William; Joe still had to swerve and dummy two defenders and slot the ball past the keeper. William added a second after about 25 minutes, using his pace he pulled clear to meet a cross from the right and finished superbly, 2-0.
Harvesters came more into the game in the last 10 minutes but we defended well, Half time 2-0 to Northwood.
Harvesters took the game to us in the second half, this was a crucial fixture for them, we were eight points clear in the race for promotion this season, and they knew a loss would possibly finish any hopes they had for promotion. They went close a number of times, and the game was opening up, for the neutral it was a very good game of football.
It finished like a cup game, end to end, with Mase Leung, William and Joe H who were constant threats all afternoon, going close. Harvesters scored with about 15 minutes remaining, only for Louie Lewinson to make it 3-1 with about 5 minutes left and we thought we were home and dry. But Harvesters did not to give up, they applied pressure and after we failed to clear from a corner they scored: 2-3. Thankfully there was only enough time to take the re-start so Woods won 3-2.
MOTM Pearse White, if as a team we made 200 tackles in the game, Pearse made 120 of them and covered every blade of grass…

13th Nov. 2011:  Bedmond 0  Northwood 2

With three key squad members missing, we travelled for a tough away fixture at Bedmond. It was very close for the first 20 minutes with Northwood having the better scoring opportunities, both William Jones and Joe Slocombe going close with a great free kick, well saved by the Bedmond keeper. Half time 0-0.
With the slight benefit of the slope in the second half, Woods pressed and pressed until after some fine work from Kailan Patel on the right, Joe Slocombe slipped the ball to the back post for William Jones to open the scoring. Mase added a second about 10 minutes from time.
This was a very good team performance, with Mathew Ralf and Hassan Hussein standing out in defence. We are still unbeaten in the league, with next weeks fixture marking the half way point this season.

6th Nov. 2011:  Maccabi 2  Northwood 5

This game had an even start with both teams looking comfortable on the ball. Woods had a couple of good scoring opportunities, going close and hitting the bar before Joe Heppelthwaite opened the scoring with a nifty turn and shot into the corner. Maccabi equalised about 5 minutes later after Pearse White headed off the line from a corner only to see the maccabi player cross the ball back in and beat everyone to score at the far post. We changed our shape and brought Louie L out wide on the left which brought immediate benefit after good work from Louie, Mase scored with a low shot past the keeper. Mase Leung’s second was a superb strike after great passing between Louis Moriarty, Joe Slocombe and William Jones…..end to end and finish in about 6 seconds. Half time 3-1 to Northwood.
Our passing was really easy on the eye, our possession stats must have been really impressive, with both William Jones and Joe Slocombe scoring to make it 5-1. We lost Joe Heppelthwaite to injury, our top goalscorer after about 10 minutes of the second half. We had many more opportunities to score, with the Maccabi keeper making some fine saves, Kailen and Hassan were immensely strong at the back, throughout the game. The move of the match again involved Louis Moriarty, Louie Lewinson, Joe Slocombe combining excellent slick pasing with William Jones superb shot beating the keeper, only for the linesman to rule William offside ??.....which was an absolute shame.
The win leaves Northwood still unbeaten in the league, joint top, only second on goal difference.

23rd Oct. 2011:  Northwood Red 3  Potters Bar 2

A superb hat-trick from man of the match William Jones kept Northwood Reds unbeaten league record. Missing several players due a school trip, we still managed to field a strong team, and controlled all the early exchanges, with our midfield winning most of the ball. After several missed opportunities, mainly due to some really goodkeeping by the Potters Bar goalie, William bagged his first goal after some fine work in midfield by Louis Moriarty, Taylor Hodgman, Mase Leung and Louie Lewinson. We missed several chances to go further up in the game, before William scored his second, just before half time after a great through ball from Louie. Half time 2-0.
William bagged his hat trick straight from the kick off within 20 seconds of resuming play. After that Northwood seemed to think the game was won, and took their foot off the pedal. The Potters Bar goalie continued to make some fantastic saves, and this seemed to rally their team further. The black and whites scored after some soft defending by Northwood. We still created chances hitting the post and narrowly shooting past, before Potters Bar broke away and scored their second. Northwood deserved the victory but it ended up being far too close for comfort at the end.

9th Oct. 2011:  Oakhill 2  Northwood Red 6

A wonderful strike by Louis Moriarty into the top corner, after 5 minutes of Northwood pressure set the ball rolling for a fine away victory against Oakhill in Southgate. This was followed by Pearse White’s first goal for Northwood from the penalty spot after Joe Slocombe was fouled, going through on goal. Taylor Hodgman made it 3-0 after about 20 minutes with a dink at the far post…and Joe Heppelthwaite’s first goal of the game made it 4-0 after 30 minutes. Some slack defending from a corner let Oakhill back in just before half time.
It was an excellent half of football from the Reds. Pearse has brought a confidence in his defending to the team and works extremely well with Louie, Louis and Joe Heppelthwaite through the middle, with pace on the wings from Mase and William, is bringing huge dividends going forward so far this season.
Second half Oakhill started the better but after about 15 minutes, Louie Lewinson put Joe H behind the defence and he rounded the keeper to make it 5-1. Louie Lewinson then scored to make it 6-1. Oakhill finished the game scoring just before the final whistle with a good strike from just inside the box.
A very good start to the season see’s the reds joint top, only placed second on goal difference….is this going to be our promotion year???
MOTM Andrew Constanti for some fine defending.

18th Sept. 2011:  Northwood 2  Belmont 2

We knew in advance that this was going to be the hardest of all league fixtures this season, as Belmont are well organised and play very good football. Woods took a long time to get into the game, Belmont controlling much of the first 20 minutes, and going 1-0 up with an excellent shot from just inside the box. We had our own chances to level with Louie Lewinson shot just over the bar and Pearse White went close with a well worked move from a corner. Half time 0-1 Belmont.
The early part of the second half was more even, with both teams going close a number of times. Belmont went 0-2 up with a through ball which their striker converted well. This seemed to get our boys in the mood for the game, and after a great passing move William Jones headed at the back post after a perfect cross from Mase Leung. It was then all Northwood, and Joe Heppelthwaite equalised after a great through ball from Louie Lewinson. We went close again a number of times hitting the post but on the face of it, a draw was probably a fair result.
A very good team performance but MOTM goes to William Jones.

11 Sept. 2011: Northwood 2  Harvesters 1

This was an evenly contested game against strong opposition. Harvesters had the best of the exchanges in the first half, but the score was 0-0 at half time. Harvesters are a well organised team and it took 2/3 of the game for Woods to finally get on top, after sterling work in midfield from motm Pearce White and Louis Moriarty, with Andrew Constanti running Pearse close for MOTM.
A great cross from Joe Slocombe found William Jones to head into the net, with a powerful finish. Woods had several chances and finished the stronger team, with Joe Heppelthwaite hitting the post after a fine passing move. With about two minutes to go, Northwood got the winner again when after great interplay, Mace Leung slid the ball past the keeper at the back post.
