WIND & SLOPE OUTWEIGH SKILL
NORTH HAREFIELD 0 NORTHWOOD 0
This was a Middlesex League game of two halves, with the wind and slope playing a greater part than the skill of either side. North Harefield had both factors in their favour in the first half, and were consequently on top throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Roger Woods had a close-range effort smothered by a brave dive from Northwood’s Dave Russell, and then Hester cleared the ball off the line after Russell had dropped it under pressure. Some slack Harefield finishing also prevented them from breaking the deadlock, and it was still 0-0 at the break.
In the second half it was Northwood’s turn and they began strongly, with Glyn Jones’ mazy runs causing havoc, which was intensified by the clever, deliberate ball skills of Harman, Tidd and Pearce.
It was the turn of Toogood in the Harefield goal to be brought into action. First he saved well from Gould, then used his legs to prevent Presswell’s slow shot from finding the net. But that was the end of the goalmouth action, and the game blustered to a disappointing end.
Northwood: Russell, J. Harman, Mills, Gould, Hester, Tidd, Pearce, Presswell, T. Roche, R. Harman, Jones, sub. N. Roche.
