Having been beaten by two lower-level
clubs in previous friendlies during the week, Colin Payne was
determined to get things back on track in this visit to Combined
Counties League side Sandhurst Town, and things looked better
throughout.
Hayes goalkeeper Adam Thomson came in on
trial and looked solid throughout his hour between the sticks, while
Sam Hurrell - released by Chelsea in the summer - steadied things on
the left.
The Woods had the better of the early
exchanges, and then took the lead after 20 minutes with an excellent
goal. Charlie Hill started the move, playing the ball wide to Lee
Holland and his cross was met by Elliott Buchanan, back from injury,
with a scissor-kick which flew into the top corner.
Almost immediately, some lack of
communication at the back almost let Sandhurst back in for an
equaliser but fortunately the shot went wide and the Woods were soon
back on top.
Hill fired one shot across the face of
the goal and then Taj struck from thirty yards with an effort that saw
the home goalkeeper make a fine save. Sadly the youngster picked up an
injury at this stage but was replaced by Danny Murphy, with the side
shuffled around.
Just before the break a Buchanan corner
saw John Lawford head the ball down at the far post and also somehow
over the crossbar. The striker picked up an eye injury in this
challenge, and was replaced for the second half with youngsters Nicky
Pearce and Tatenda Nyamangunda coming on, Dave Tilbury also making
way.
Dean Clark went close six minutes in the
second half and then Sandhurst almost scored when their striker took a
cross down well but chipped over the bar.
Clark has another on-target effort saved
but after 69 minutes the Woods did go further ahead as a through-ball
allowed Hill to go past one defender and the slot home with an angled
drive.
The third goal saw a crossfield pass find
Hurrell and he raced into the box before squaring the ball to Hill for
him to slot home his second of the game.
Sandhurst proved spirited all the way and
went close again on 77 minutes as a chip beat ‘keeper Ashley Harris
but bounced wide of the goal and then Harris made a good save from a
close-range effort following a free-kick which dropped in the six-yard
box.
Jack Bennett had a shot saved late on
before the Woods added a fourth in the final minute. Hurrell again
provided the cross and this time Lee Holland ghosted in at the far
post to steer the ball past the ‘keeper.
