The Woods notched their first league win since the August Bank Holiday Monday with this hard-working performance that brought all three points back from Chipstead. It also ended a long-run of nine away league games without a win that stretched back to early March having picked up only two draws during that time.

Northwood had to go into the game missing influential skipper Luke Tingey, ruled out with a hamstring problem, with Romario Jonas shrugging off his own ankle issue to take his place. Riccardo Alexander-Greenaway was also out with a knock so Zeid Hannachi and Keagan Cole filled the bench. Carl Stewart took over the captain’s armband.

With Wednesday night’s County Cup win on penalties giving the side some much needed confidence, the Woods started brightly and they probably should have taken the lead in just the second minute. Some good work and quick feet from Reece Cameron saw him cut the ball back to Harry McCorkell and his prod at goal almost beat Harrison Firth, the goalkeeper just keeping it out and holding on right on the goal line at the second attempt.

Northwood continued to press and the lively Harry McKenna earned a free-kick about twenty yards out after some tricky play, cutting in from the left. Harry Gallagher struck the dead ball well and Firth dived to his left to save but could only push it out. Cameron was onto it quickly and clipped it inside the near post before the keeper could recover and the Woods were in front.

Chipstead hadn’t really threatened up to this stage but they almost hit back immediately as Daniel Berry did well down the right to knock in an inviting cross but Brad Wilson steered his header over the top.

The Woods continued to push forward though and a good run and cross from Dan Williams saw Kofi Anokye-Boadi, playing against his former club, stretch to poke a shot goalwards but Firth was there to block at close-range. Cameron was almost onto another loose ball but he couldn’t force it in.

There could have been a further goal for Northwood after 38 minutes as Stewart played a neat ball across to McKenna who sent over a cross which was destined for Williams until Lewis Taylor made a superb interception to halt the move.

With a half-time lead to build on, the Woods had to defend as the Chips pushed to get back into the game and young keeper Roraigh Browne made a neat save at his near post to deny Berry on 54 minutes. Just a minute later, Northwood doubled their lead.

Good work in the centre of the park between Anokye-Boadi and Deago Dunbar-Bonnie led to a neat through-ball which Williams raced onto before lifting over the oncoming Firth for a clinical finish.

Unfortunately, just five minutes later, Chipstead were gifted a way back into the game. A poor pass allowed the Chips to break away three on one and they made no mistake with Taylor able to fire into an empty net at the end of the move.

Sensing a chance of getting back into a game that looked lost, the home side stepped up the work rate but their chances were restricted by some solid defending. After 76 minutes the Chips did win a corner which Danny Dudley headed over unmarked and seven minutes later Browne again saved at his near-post to deny substitute Jacob Sewell. And just before the end of normal time, there was another corner which saw another header clip the Woods bar as they lived a little dangerously.

But it was all over just a minute into stoppage-time as substitute Godlove Oppong, on for Williams, raced onto a through-ball from Stewart. Firth came well out of goal to clear but the ball bounced awkwardly on the bobbly surface and Oppong took full advantage, racing past the keeper and walking the ball into an empty net for his first Woods goal.
