RIVERSIDE MAN OF THE MATCH:
xxx |
|||||
Referee: Mr Kyle Kirkbride |
Assistants: Mr Stephen Woodison |
The Woods enjoyed a competitive run-out in this Middlesex Charity Cup tie but once again looked punchless up front, in their fourth game without a goal.
In the last match before appointing a new manager, Timi Salako and Samuel Ntim-Addae were given starting places ahead of the injured Murray Williamson and Andrew Murphy.
Northwood started brightly and after just four minutes they were almost in front as Ntim-Addae fed Charlie Hill in the box, and he chipped the ball up before hitting a volley that seemed destined for the back of the net, but actually flashed inches wide.
Unfortunately, there was little other goalmouth action for the Woods with Bedfont shading the half after this. Tommy McCarthy forced goalkeeper Charlie Miller into a couple of good saves in quick succession and the Woods 'keeper, making his home debut, also pushed a Jim Ward header wide before half-time.
But there had actually been little in attack from either side and Bedfont made a double substitution ten minutes into the second-half in an attempt to change things around with Carl McCluskey and Javonne Molloy replacing Davis Haule and former Woods favourite Gavin Hart.
On the hour, some good work from Hill and a square ball created a great opportunity for Ntim-Addae to make a name for himself but he failed to control the ball with just the 'keeper to beat.
Northwood were enjoying their best spell of the match at this stage. The industrious Wayne Jackson tried an overhead-kick that was comfortably held by goalkeeper Gary Ross and then Rodney Hicks was introduced for Salako with the hope that he could threaten down the flanks. He immediately got a shot in on target which Ross kept out but on 69 minutes Bedfont got their noses in front when a Jon-Jo Bates cut in from the left and set up McCluskey who slotted home.
After that there was never any real sign of a recovery from the home side and McCluskey pounced on a defensive error to fire home his second goal nine minutes later and secure his side's quarter-final spot away at Hillingdon Borough.
