Colin Payne would have been disappointed
with the Woods' performance in their third pre-season game on Saturday.
The game away at Godalming Town, who switched late in the day to Bisley
FC, and there was a good pitch surface, so no excuse there. Godalming have
been promoted this season to the Ryman Division One South, having finished
high up in the Combined Counties League last season, and they showed
plenty of confidence.
With Wayne Carter and Gavin Hart both missing through holidays, there was
a lack of depth in midfield, and this showed in the lack of chances
created throughout the match. The Woods fielded all their main
strike-force, some in unfamiliar positions, yet hardly managed a shot on
goal.
After a goalless first-half which saw James Shipperley miss a close-range
header while our opponents hit the bar with one effort, the second-half
looked likely to be going the same way.
Then, with fifteen minutes to go, the referee awarded a penalty for a
innocuous challenge by Adam Gill and Godalming scored from the spot.
Defeat seemed to be on the cards until Kyle Matthews took advantage of
some tired legs in the home defence by dancing through several challenges
and slotting home an equaliser.
