Youth Reports 2016-17

26 March 2017

Northwood Reds Under 13s 6  Brady Maccabi Reds 0

The boys' best league victory of the season came just at the right time, and another two wins mean that we could still stay in the division. The boys' performance and attitude was so much better than last week. In what can only be described as a bad-tempered game the boys showed good discipline against a side that wanted to argue and dispute every decision that a very good referee made. So bad was the language of one Maccabi boy he found himself being sent off just before half-time, something I thought I would not see for a few more years yet.

The team started well but found it difficult to move the ball in a very busy midfield. This week, though, the boys were making better decisions and the work rate was high as well. In the 18th minute a through ball to Ashley found him one-on-one with the keeper, just as he was about to shoot he was clipped from behind by a Maccabi defender but the referee did play an advantage to let him shoot but clearly off balance the shot went wide and the ref correctly awarded a penalty. This started the first of many uproars from the Maccabi manager but correctly the ref ignored him and awarded the penalty kick. Ashley stepped up and smashed the ball into the left corner: 1-0 Northwood.

The second goal was a great solo run by Lewis Reid who saw his first short saved by the stand-in Maccabi keeper but he then fired the rebound in to make it 2-0 to Northwood. This then had the second uproar from the Maccabi manager who felt that play should have been stopped for an injury to one of his players, the ref did admit he had not seen the incident and the goal stood, this then caused the Maccabi player to swear a number of times at the ref that gave him no option but to send him off and blew for half-time.

You could see that all the players were on edge at the break, so we tried to calm them and just concentrate on their football as they were by far the better team. The second half started with Maccabi down to 10, and thet decided that they were just going to kick the ball long using the wind that was now at their backs. This could have been a good tactic but became very predictable as they used it every time and they were not executing it at all well. Northwood, however, were playing the sort of football that we know they can, with Sam, Oliver and Lewis Reid all going close until on the 46th minute Ashley got his second.

The boys were now playing with a lot more confidence than we have seen over the last few weeks and were making the right decisions as well and on another day, could have had double figures as far as goals were concerned. Ashley did complete his hat-trick with another fine finish. Then came Ashley's fourth, arriving from a great pass from Lewis Reid; he found Ashley, who again finished well. With the game coming to an end the boys were still attacking with Sam having one of his best games so far for Northwood and was just beaten to player of the match, which went to Dec. After another attack, we got a corner and up stepped Arun who headed in his second goal of the season to complete the rout: 6-0.

As well as all the goalscorers, it was especially pleasing that the back four of Ale, Dan Terry, Arun and George with the hard work from Felipe and Oliver we kept a clean sheet, which also would not have been possible with good work from our keepers Dan Davey and Rayyan.

Line up: Dan Davey, Ale , George, Dan Terry, Arun, Felipe, Sam, Oliver, Dec, Lewis Reid, Ashley, Rayyan.

Well done to all the boys

Dave Blincko
