Match Reports 2011-12

11th Dec. 2011: Northwood 9  Whetstone Wanderers Pumas 0

In the 4th minute, Dan N forced a corner on the right, which was taken by Matt – the ball got through to James H at the back post – his first strike was saved but James reacted quickly to poke the ball home for the opener 1v0. Dan N had the ball in the back of the Pumas’ net, but it was ruled out for offside. Oli and Dan W combined well to set up James F and he volleyed just wide of the left hand post.
In the last couple of minutes of the first half Max and Dan W passed the ball out of their penalty area following a Pumas’ corner and found Ben on the right he then played Dan W back in and he beat the last defender and was clean through but placed his shot wide of the left hand post – it was a shame as it was the best move of the game. David then played Ben in as he attacked the Pumas’ area from the left cutting inside and slipped the ball home for 2v0 (H-T).
On 43 minutes David forced a corner on the left, and his kick found Luke on the edge of the Pumas’ area – his shot was deflected in to Harry’s path and he fired home from close range 3v0. From a Pumas’ goal kick the ball was returned by Northwood’s midfield and flicked on by Dan N into Harry’s path and he slid a low shot inside the left hand post 4v0. David had an attempt saved by the Pumas’ keeper onto the left hand post.
On 56 minutes, Ben won the ball from midway in the Northwood half and sent a through ball for Harry to run onto and he travelled 30 yards into the Pumas’ area and struck his shot inside the right hand post for his hat-trick 5v0. Just past the hour mark Luke took a long free-kick from Northwood’s half and the ball went over the Pumas’ defence and Ben timed his run well and ran on to score 6v0.
Adam R found Ben who advanced towards the Pumas’ goal and although his attempt was saved the keeper couldn’t hold the ball and Max followed up to tap home the rebound from an acute angle on the right 7v0. James H passed to Luke and he sent Ben through from the left and he went on a 30 yard run and scored inside the bottom right hand corner for his hat-trick 8v0.
A good run by James F on the left saw him cross to Ben on the edge of the box (centre of goal) and he drove his shot home 9v0. There was time for James H to hit the right hand post just before the final whistle.
Today’s match was played in difficult conditions, but Northwood dominated possession and could have scored even more had it not been for the Pumas’ keeper - the score-line was not flattering. Man of the match went to Max. The team has improved from the start of the season going from strength to strength – for the stats in all competitions played 13, won 10, drawn 2 and lost 1. Scored 75 goals; Conceded 15.

4th Dec. 2011: Yeading Wanderers A 2   Northwood 7

In the Middlesex County FA Youth Cup, Northwood took the kick-off and within 40 seconds went ahead when James H laid off a nice pass to Dan N whose shot (within the Yeading penalty area) went inside the left hand post 1v0. On 3 minutes a Yeading attacker hit a shot from inside the Northwood box that was going to the right hands side of the net and Adam dived and turned the ball onto the right hand post for a corner. However, on 5 minutes Yeading won a penalty and scored 1v1. The games was pretty even for the next 10 minutes until Matt crossed from the right and Dan N flicked on for Ben to run onto unchallenged to fire in 1v2.
Ben was fouled 30 yards out centre of goal – Luke struck the free-kick goal bound and the keeper appeared to catch it with his hands and the ball hitting the high part of the net, but the referee did not give it. On 18 minutes Yeading won a second penalty, which they converted 2v2. On the half hour Adam R did well when on the ground he managed to pass the ball to Ben who advanced and hit a good shot that the Yeading keeper just about grasped. On the stroke of half- time Dan W made a run across the pitch from the left to the right and he found Dan M who then laid it inside to Ben 20 yards out and he fired a sweet shot into the top left hand corner of the net 2v3.
The second half started with Northwood once again finding the Yeading net early on, when Dan N’s attempted cross/shot was blocked the loose ball fell invitingly to Harry just outside the box and his low strike went inside the left hand post 2v4. On 40 minutes Harry found Dan W on the right and he clipped the ball from inside the box for Dan N to run on to and he chipped the keeper from 10 yards and the ball hit the back of the net for 2v5. On 43 minutes James F crossed the ball from the left to Dan N who controlled it and laid it back to Ben on the edge of the box and he struck a low shot into the back of the Yeading net for his hat-trick 2v6.
On 46 minutes, James F won the ball 30 yards out on the left and he hit a high looping shot that beat the Yeading keeper and went under the bar 2v7. There was time for Northwood to score from a free-kick by Luke that was chipped in, but Dan W was adjudged off-side when he fired home from close range.
The first half hour was very even in terms of possession, but thereafter Northwood took control of the game playing some neat football - creating and converting their chances for a magnificent seven! Today’s display was one of the best team performances of the season. The boys all played well and put in lots of effort. Ben deservedly won man of the match. Northwood have now reached the quarter finals of the Middlesex Cup!

27th Nov. 2011:  Borehamwood Youth Blue 3   Northwood 5

Northwood were attacking into a strong wind in the first half, but Borehamwood had the sun in their eyes. After James H had a shot saved on 4 minutes, Dan W received the ball on the left from Ben and he attacked the penalty area and slotted home for the opener 0v1. James H crossed from the right and Oli headed over. On 12 minutes Adam’s goal kick into the wind went to a Borehamwood player and he kicked it back over Adam’s head into the empty net 1v1.
Borehamwood had a direct free-kick that skimmed the top of the Northwood bar on 15 minutes. On 33 minutes Ben found Matt in the box and he slipped the ball under the keeper for 1v2. As the clock ticked towards half-time the Borehamwood striker got between 2 defenders and blasted a shot into the net from outside the box for 2v2. On 37 minutes, David crossed the ball from the left and the keeper parried it to Will and his cross found Matt running into the box on the right and he scored 2v3. Dan W laid the ball back for Luke and he fired just wide of the left post.
On 45 minutes Adam R took a free-kick from the Northwood half and Harry controlled the ball with his chest and squared it to Ben just past half-way and he in turn sent a through bal for Dan N to run onto and he calmly slotted the ball home 2v4. Two minutes later, Luke cleared from deep inside the Northwood half and the ball bounced over the last defender and Dan sprinted past and lobbed the oncoming keeper from the left and the ball bounced into an empty net 2v5.
Dan W had a good attempt with a right foot shot go just wide of the left hand post. The Borehamwood striker scored his hat-trick from the right hand corner of the Northwood penalty box, which is how the game ended 3v5.
Today’s match was very even in the first half, but Northwood seemed to come out with more purpose in the second half scoring 3 times in the opening quarter of an hour. The wind caused a problem for both sides, but when the ball was played on the ground we saw some good passing movements and attacks. Dan W and Matt took their goals well, but Dan New was man of the match for his general effort and two quality goals.

20th Nov. 2011:  Harvesters 1  Northwood 1

Adam was called into action in the 5th minute when a Harvesters attacker was put through with a clear shot on goal. The next 20 minutes saw a very evenly fought period of the game, but on 26 minutes a moment of brilliance – Dan N passed to Ben and his pass seemed to go under James F’s feet, but with little back-lift James fired a 20 yard shot from right of centre into the top left hand corner of the net, giving the Harvester keeper no chance 0v1. Just before half time, Harvesters were awarded a free-kick just outside the box – the kick was taken and the ball was going into the top left hand corner of Northwood’s net, but Max was on the goal line and headed over. H-T : 0v1
Northwood intercepted the kick off and Dan W advanced and passed to James F who had a shot from outside the box, but the keeper gathered it. From a Harvester’s goal kick, Ben won the ball and had a shot from 25 yards that was saved. Dan N won the ball in midfield and found Ben who dribbled past a defender but saw his shot saved. Harvesters had seen a 2nd half attempt fly over the bar from close range, but they equalised on 55 minutes, when Northwood’s defence appealed for an offside that did not come, while a Harvesters attacker went through and scored from close range 1v1.
On the hour mark Dan W dribbled down the right wing and passed the ball to Harry who shot just wide. Today’s match was very even with both defences playing well, restricting the number of chances in the game - most of which were from outside of the box.
Manager Dave Benton was generally pleased with the team’s performance but in particular highlighted Ben, Adam R and man of the match, Luke. Northwood are level on 11 points with Harvesters, but stay 3rd as they have a superior goal difference.

13th Nov. 2011:  Northwood 4 Feltham Youth 2

Northwood had most of the possession in the first 15-20 minutes and created chances through Ben and Oli, but their closest attempt was a lob by Dan N that was tipped over as the ball was heading into the top-left hand corner by the Feltham keeper. Ben found himself one on one with the keeper from a good pass out of midfield by Oli, but his strike went wide of the left hand post. On 17 minutes Luke’s free-kick to Dan W on the left wing saw him strike a shot that beat the keeper and strike the left hand post – 2 follow ups resulted in the ball being cleared off the line for a corner. DW took the corner and Luke headed home for the opener 1-0. Luke won a header just inside the Feltham half which James H controlled and laid on to Dan W who saw his shot punched over the bar by the Feltham keeper. The resulting corner was only half-cleared to Dan W on the left and he swept it back in and Oli struck the cross on the volley just off-target from 8 yards. On the half hour Feltham struck back with a good strike that went in under the bar from the edge of the Northwood box 1-1. Just before the half-time break, Dan W hit a shot that was tipped over again.
On 41 minutes Feltham created a chance and took advantage of Northwood’s hesitation in clearing the ball and scored a second goal from their third meaningful attack 1-2. Luke hit a post from a corner and the loose ball was cleared for another corner. Dan W took the kick - the ball slipped through the Feltham keeper’s hands and Harry reacted quickest heading home from 6 yards in the 47th minute 2-2. Northwood gradually increased their hold on the game and in the 55th minute a decent move saw Luke flick the ball over the Feltham defence for Ben to run on to goal – he shot the keeper saved and when the ball fell to Ben he crossed it and James F scored a 3rd headed goal 3-2!  On the hour mark Ben found Dan W out on the right and he pulled the ball back for James F and he shot over from 12 yards. A minute later James H found Dan W and he dribbled past a defender into the box and slid the ball home 4-2.
Northwood dominated possession and created plenty of chances and could have been 4v1 up at the break, but the Feltham keeper put up good resistance to deny them. The second half saw Northwood up the tempo and react well when they went behind – when they got their noses in front there was only going to be one winner. Dan and Harry won man of the match, because they made an impact in the second half and turned the game in Northwood’s favour. A good performance, especially in the second half see Northwood into the 4th round of the Middlesex Cup.

6th Nov. 2011:  Northwood 2 Pinnacle 0

In the second round of the League Cup Northwood played the first half with the wind behind them. In the 4th minute, Luke played a long ball out of Northwood’s half to James H and he in turn found James F attacking towards the Pinnacle area form the right and he shot just wide of the top right hand corner of the net. On 11 minutes a good corner by Dan W landed in the 6 yard box, but 3 attempts at goal by James F, Luke and James H are blocked by the Pinnacle defence. In the 17th minute Ben’s through ball was blocked but the loose ball was picked up by Oli about 25 yards out and he struck a strong shot just wide of the right hand post.
On 20 minutes Ben’s throw in from the right to Luke saw him put in a cross come shot - the linesman flagged as there were 2 Northwood players in offside positions on the edge of the Pinnacle area but the ball cleared everyone and bounced over the keeper into the back of the net. Unfortunately the referee disallowed the attempt as he stated that the offside players were interfering with the Pinnacle keeper. However 3 minutes later Luke’s square ball to Ben was in turn passed down the right wing to James H and he chipped the ball over the Pinnacle keeper into the top left hand corner of the net for the opening goal 1v0. On the half hour, a long free-kick by Luke looked like it was running out of play, but Matt had other ideas and he stretched to clip a shot from close range that hit the outside of the right hand post. H-T 1v0.
The second half would see Northwood attacking into the wind. A nice move from the restart ended with Ben hitting a low shot just wide of the left hand post. Thereafter, Pinnacle took command of play for the next 20 minutes creating several chances and probably should have scored at least one goal for their efforts. Adam made a good diving save to force the ball wide of the right hand post and also saved well with his foot when a Pinnacle forward was through one on one with him. When the Pinnacle attack beat Adam, they saw 2 of their attempts go wide of both posts. Harry saw a firm header from Matt’s corner go over the Pinnacle bar.
The next goal would be crucial and Northwood gained a penalty on 56 minutes when Dan N was brought down in the box – James F scored placing his kick inside the bottom right hand post 2v0. The Pinnacle centre-back who had been solid at the back sent a long ball out of the Pinnacle half for the attacker to hone in on goal, but his attempt was well defended by Adam R. Then in the last minute of the game Dan W was hauled down by the Pinnacle keeper – DanW stepped up to take the penalty but saw his attempt go wide of the right hand post. F-T 2v0.
Northwood played well in the first half enjoying a greater share of possession and much of it in the Pinnacle half. Due to the strong wind they did see a number of passes go through to the keeper or out of play. They were unlucky to see their first goal ruled out, but this seemed to stir them into action resulting in them taking a well deserved lead. However the second half saw them having to defend and it was ‘backs to the wall’ for the first 20 minutes. Pinnacle presented much tougher opposition today than they did when the teams met for their league fixture a month ago and could count themselves a little unlucky. The home supporters were on tenterhooks for a while and there were some cackles to boot. This was a good test and although coach Dave Benton rightly said Pinnacle “looked like they really wanted it” in the second half there were some good displays by Luke, Adam, Max and man of the match James H. The Pinnacle players came over after their end of match round up by their manager to give 3 cheers and good luck wishes to the Northwood team for round 3 – a nice touch.

30th Oct. 2011:  Abbots Youth 0  Northwood 12

In this Challenge Cup Round 2 match, Northwood attacked the AY goal right from the kick-off and had chances through Dan W, Luke and Matt in the first 10 minutes, but did not break the deadlock until the 11th minute when Luke clipped a ball from midfield for Dan W to run onto and he slotted the ball home: 0-1. Luke had a couple of attempts in the next couple of minutes with a 30 yard effort saved by the AY keeper and then hit a half volley on to the AY bar. A good move down the left involving Will, Dan W and a cross by David picked out James H who struck a good shot that was well saved. On 18 minutes David did a 1-2 with Luke and fired a shot on the half volley that drew a good diving save by the AY keeper. Following a short corner by Matt to Oli he found James H who aimed a shot that beat the keeper, but an AY defender headed over the bar for another corner. A few minutes before the half-time break, Luke found James F on the left and his cross went along the line of the 6 yard box and Matt tapped in for 0-2.

  • 67 mins. ~ Will went on a run down the left wing cut inside and scores inside right hand post 0-12.

Northwood dominated possession and confined play in AY’s half from the off right through to the final whistle. They had several shots from outside the AY box in the first half, but the AY keeper was equal to the vast majority of their attempt. In the second half Northwood were clinical and rewarded with plenty of goals. Northwood’s defence were rarely troubled and Adam was a spectator for most of the game. They now go forward into the draw for round 3 of this cup competition.

16th Oct. 2011:  Cowley Youth 0  Northwood 10

In this Middlesex County FA Youth U13 Cup tie, Northwood were away to Cowley at the Cowley Rec. near Uxbridge. Conditions – fresh, but dry. Cowley had players missing and only fielded 10 players.
The game got underway and Northwood almost struck in the first minute when Luke found Ben on the right and his centre was met by James F first time, but the Cowley keeper made a good block on the line. On 8 minutes, Ben’s shot was only half-blocked by the Cowley defence and the loose ball was turned in by Dan W for the opener 0-1. On 14 minutes Dan N found Dan W out on the left and he attacked the Cowley penalty area beating off a challenge and firing a low shot home for his second 0-2. On 21 minutes Northwood increased their lead  when James F’s throw  from mid-way in the Cowley half on the right found Ben and his first attempt was blocked but when the ball rebounded to him he fired a powerful shot that took a deflection off a Cowley defender and it went inside the left hand post 0-3. A cross by Luke on the right was met by a neat overhead kick by Ben that went straight into the Cowley keeper’s hands. David forced a corner on the left - Will sent the corner kick onto Luke’s head and he directed it home on the half hour mark 0-4. Will won the ball on the left just inside the Cowley half and he found David who glided past a defender and sent a good cross to the back post for Matt to slot home 0-5. Just before the end of the first half Luke won the ball on half way and sent a ball over the Cowley defence, which Dan W latched onto and he chipped the ball over the keeper for his hat-trick.  H-T 0-6.
The second half saw Northwood continue to create chances, but they squandered a few attempts before they scored again – (47 minutes) Dan W was on the score-sheet again courtesy of a cross by Matt from the right wing 0-7. Four minutes later Matt took a corner from the right that was headed on by Luke and Dan N fired in from an acute angle off the crossbar 0-8. On 62 minutes Dan W went into a 50:50 with the Cowley keeper and the ball spilled out to James H on the edge of the box and he fired into the top right hand corner of the goal 0-9. Adam R took a throw in on the left to James H who passed to James F and he fired a good shot inside the left hand post 0-10.
Northwood controlled the game, but Cowley competed well despite only having ten men for the whole 70 minutes. Northwood defended very well and so for the most part Adam was a spectator. They also created plenty of chances and the score-line could have been even higher if they had been more clinical in front of goal. They now meet either Feltham or Ruislip in round 3 of this cup competition.

2nd Oct. 2011:  Omonia 1  Northwood 6

Today Northwood were at home to Omonia Green (OW). The conditions were hot and sunny (30 degrees) – firm pitch. Northwood got off to an excellent start with an attempt by Matt on the right saved for a corner. On 5 minutes they took the lead when a long ball was headed on by James F that Dan N ran on to beating the last defender to the ball then chipping the keeper running past him to bang it in the back of the net from a couple of yards out 1v0. Oli then received the ball from Dan N and his 20 yard attempt just cleared the bar.
On 15 minutes Northwood doubled their lead when the James F headed the ball that split the OW defence, Dan N accelerated past the last defender to slot home from the edge of the penalty area 2v0. A couple of minute later, James F was clean through but was flattened by the OW keeper just outside the box – Luke took the resulting free-kick, drawing a save. On 22 minutes, good pressure by Northwood down the left saw an OW clearance fall square to Ben 20 yards out and his powerful strike flew inside the right hand post for 3v0. OW had made a couple of attacks without really troubling Northwood’s goal but an attack down the right was crossed from the bi-line and headed into the top right hand corner 3v1.
A long free-kick was knocked on by Harry to the right hand edge of the OW area – James H chased it down and sent a low cross into the 6 yard box and found David who turned it in for 4v1. Just before half-time a good inswinging corner by OW was arrowing into the Northwood net, but Adam saved well. H-T 4v1.
The second half saw an early chance when a cross from the right was headed on to the OW post by one of the OW defenders. Ben beat 3 players down the right and his cross found David in the box, but his right foot shot came off a defender and the keeper was able to gather. Mid-way through the second half Dan W broke down the right passed to James F who put David in with a half empty net in front of him and he did not disappoint rolling the ball home for 5v1.
A handball just outside the OW box led to a free-kick – Luke took it but his attempt just went wide of the mark. Ben sent David through down the left wing his shot was blocked but he collected the rebound and found Dan W at the back post and he tapped in for 6v1. Today’s game was Northwood’s fourth and they carried their good form (from the previous week’s 9v2 away win at Aldenham Tigers) and dominated play for much of the game. They could have been a little more ruthless in front of goal, but created plenty of chances to justify the end result. The heat took its toll on some of the players, but tidy defending and efforts in chasing the ball down gave their opponents few opportunities in the match.
Generally the passing and movement of the players was a step up on previous games leading to a good team performance. David was man of the match.
