Match Reports 2009-10

12th April 2010: Northwood Red 3 Potters Bar 2

The under 18s reds stretched their unbeaten league run to 9 games with a 3-2 victory over Potters Bar. The first two goals had a bit of déjà vu about them. Paul Foster broke clear down the right wing and instead of shooting from a tight angle squared the ball to George Holland to tap in to give the Woods a 2-0 lead.
It wasn’t plain sailing unfortunately for the Reds as Potters bar as they managed to pull a goal back mid way through the first half. The number 10 who caused the Woods defence all sorts of problems throughout the game beat the office side trap to fire low in the far corner.
Northwood restored a 2 goal lead with a goal from James Roche. A free kick on the right side was struck by George Holland, as the ball took a deflection off a Potters bar player, fell straight into the path of James Roche who guided the ball into the corner.
With half time approaching Potters Bar took the shine off a good Northwood first half with a second goal and from the number 10. Once again breaking through the defence got a bit of luck as his initial shot was dealt with by Jack Cockburn and Mac Johnson in the woods goal but thankfully for him the rebound bounced in his favour to tap in on the stroke of half time.
Into the second half Potters Bar increased the intensity creating several chances but the Reds seemed to have luck on their side with the ball either going wide of the post and straight into the keepers hands. Northwood had several chances to kill the game off with Jack Dodds coming closest as his shot was cleared off the line after a pullback but the Woods held on for another vital 3 points.
There were many strong performances but Alex Simmons was named man of the match

20 March 2010: Bedmond 2 Northwood Red 3

Northwood under 18s Reds got back to winning ways away to Bedmond with a late winner thanks to George Holland.
With the lads down to the bare 11, started brightly creating several early chances in a change away strip of blue. Michael Delaselle and George Holland both got in good wide positions providing pull backs, but the lads where unable to be clinical in front of goal either miss timing their shots or last ditched defending.
Northwood did take the lead mid way through the first half with a goal from Aaron Whittingham. A Bedmond goal kick was won on the half way line by Jack Cockburn who seemed to win every header at the back was picked up by Paul foster who laid a passed onto Delaselle. Michael played a one touch through ball to Aaron who coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.
The blues continued to dominate the game creating several chances but where let down with the final decision when tight angle shots should have been dragged back. Northwood did have the ball in the net a second time, George Holland who tormented the Bedmond right back, delivered a left footed cross for Aaron Whittingham to contest. With the ball only half cleared, it fell to Morton Urdal on the edge of the box who smashed the ball in the net only for the referee to pull it back for a foul by Aaron which seemed a little harsh.
Northwood paid the penalty for not taking their chances when Bedmond equalised just before half time by conceding a penalty. With the ball scrabbling in the box, Nathan Brinton was on the floor when the referee claimed he handled the ball and the official pointed to the spot. Mac Johnson went the right way but the shot was just too far in the left corner.
Into the second half Bedmond started to attack Northwood creating several close chances  but where kept at bay by Mac Johnson and some last ditch defending. Bedmond did take the lead on the hour mark a ball on the right side seemed to go through a bunch of Northwood bodies made its way to a free opposition attacker at the far post who slotted the ball in.
Momentum switched on the Bedmond goal in Northwood’s favour with George Holland equalising a few minutes later. George was put clean through and although the ball was initially saved by the keeper, Holland was able to slot away the rebound.
As the game ticked on, you thought it just wasn’t going to be Northwood’s day with Delaselle and Whittingham just needing to make clean contact to put the ball away. The referee also disallowed a James Roche goal for an earlier offence which again did seem harsh on the lads. Reward was to come late in the game when George Holland came up with the winner with a few minutes to go. Michael Delaselle broke clear down the left pulled the ball back for Holland who hit the underside of the bar from less than 5 yards out. As the ball bounced up and his back to goal George’s over head kick was able to seal a vital 3 points for Northwood.
Man of the match goes to Chris Malin, although there were several other strong performance from the boys.

14th Feb. 2010: Northwood Red 4 Alexandra Park East 0

Northwood Under 18’s red cruised into the quarter final of the league cup with a masterful display against Alexandra Park East. These two teams met in the Challenge Cup earlier in the season, with the visitors coming out on to,p but the reds wanted to ensure the lightening didn’t strike twice.
First half goals from Michael Delaselle, George Holland and Carmine Nisco ensured the Reds went into the break with a comfortable lead.
The game was sealed early in the second half when a George Holland free kick was glanced in by Jack Dodds to set up a quarter final place against St Albans in a few weeks time.
Man of the match goes to the whole team.

7th Feb 2010: London Maccabi 2 Northwood Red 4

The under 18’s red returned for their first league match of 2010 with a 4-2 win at London Maccabi.
Northwood started the game brightly and nearly scored in the opening two minutes of the game. James Roche who gave the London Maccabi right back all sorts of problems during the opening Stages, received a long pass from Chris Malin, who crossed the ball for Carmine Nisco to glance his header wide of the post.
However, it only took 5 minutes of the game gone for the Reds to take the lead. Northwood worked the ball down the right side of the pitch which found its way to Mark Bennett who had pushed forward from his right back position. With James Roche contesting to get to Mark’s cross, it was a London Maccabi defender who made contact sending the ball goal bound crossing the line to put Northwood into a 1-0 lead. After the goal it wasn’t all plane sailing for Northwood with Maccabi coming back into to the game creating chances, but thankfully only long range shots.
Although playing on a 3G surface which suits the reds game, they where often found guilty of not releasing the ball quickly enough and they where nearly punished just before the break. With Mac Johnson (in the Reds goal) wanting Jack Cockburn to head a simple long ball into his hands decided to take an extra touch and pass the ball back. With Mac unable to pick the ball up, his clearance fell straight to a London Maccabi striker. Clean though one on one it was a combination of Nathan Brinton and Mark Bennett who got back to ensure Northwood went into half time with a slender 1-0 lead
Maccabi where soon on level terms early in the second half. With some neat passing playing and the Reds not closing the ball quickly enough, a London Maccabi Striker had a shot which hit the underside of the bar after Mac was able to get his finger tips to the ball. However, with the ball free it was a blue shirt who reacted quickest to send the teams level. The teams didn’t stay level for long as Northwood regained the lead. Nathan Briton played a through ball for Michael Delaselle to latch onto holding off the last defender to the ball. Taking the ball around the keeper he was able to slot the ball in with his weaker right foot putting the Reds 2-1 up. It didn’t take long though for the blues to equalise. Mark Bennett received the ball on the half way line, with little movement around him; he attempted to play the ball back to one of the reds centre backs which was easily intercepted by a blue shirt. Macabbi went on the counter attack and without a red shirt applying any pressure and just backing off allowed the shot sending the teams’ level with only 15 minutes of the second half played.
With the next goal being critical, it was Northwood who was able to regain the lead half way through the half. George Holland continued to give the London Maccabi right back as didn’t James Roche in the first half, delivered a low cross to the front post which could only be cleared to Alex Simmons on the edge of the 18 yard box who hit a clean left foot strike past the keeper.
With the Woods in the lead, discipline was required in order to get the three points, but Macabbi did continue to create chances and nearly equalised for the 3rd time but the striker could only loft his shot over the bar. With both sides cramping up on the 3G surface Northwood had to play the last few minutes with 10 men with Morton Urdal having to go off. However, with London Macabbi going for broke, the reds killed the game off with a fourth goal. Paul Foster picked the ball on the right side cut in to play a through ball for George Holland to run onto and slot the ball home to guarantee all three points.
Although playing on a 3G surface, Northwood didn’t take advantage of playing on such a smooth surface. With some nice goals scored throughout the side, they would hope to cut the goals they conceded in future games.
Michael Delaselle is named man of the match with a continued engine like performance as well as taking his goal well.

24th Jan 2010: Northwood 2 Enfield Town 3

90 seconds away. Woods were a mere 90 seconds away from penalties when they conceded a late goal that knocked them out of their county cup quarter final. Northwood started brightly creating numerous chances, but if it weren’t for some last ditch Enfield defending as well as the keeper making some fantastic saves, the game could have been won in the opening 10 minutes.
Enfield did have the ball in the net with virtually their first attack. A ball which flew across the face of goal wasn’t cleared by the Woods defence was hit by an attacker coming round the back. With the ball heading goal bound an Enfield attacker who was standing in an offside position decided to tap the ball in from 2 yards where had he have left it, the goal would have stood.
Enfield did take the lead against the run of play with some neat quick interchanging balls, which suddenly found themselves one on one placing the ball past Mac Johnson in the Woods goal. However, it wasn’t long before the Woods drew Level. Paul Foster was fouled just outside the box; he dusted himself down and curled a fantastic free over the wall in the top left corner. Soon after Northwood took a deserved lead into half time, another curling free kick from Foster was met by a glancing Michael Delaselle header to beating the keeper to the ball.
Into the 2nd half, the Woods started to tire, Enfield started to push more bodies forward but were restricted to long range efforts which was credit it to the Woods defence. Both sides knew the next goal would be crucial and with Enfield pushing Northwood did try and catch the whites on the break but were let down by the final ball. With 8 minutes left of the 90 Enfield drew level, a corner from the left was swung into the 6 yard box and was powerfully headed in. After the equaliser, Enfield pushed to get the winner in normal time without success.
Going into extra time, both teams had good opportunities to take the lead. However, with 90 seconds of extra time remaining, Enfield managed to sneak a through ball through the woods defence for the first time in the match and one of the whites was just able to get to the ball before the advancing Woods keeper. Northwood nearly snatched a late equaliser, Michael Delaselle managed to nick the ball past the advancing Enfield keeper but over hit the ball wide rolling wide for a goal kick.
On the full time whistle with the lads shattered and gutted the lads can feel proud of their efforts.

Nov 22nd 2009: Park View Rangers 2 Northwood Red 2 (Northwood Win 4-3 on Pens)

This was set to be a stern test for Northwood drawn against Edmonton’s Park View Rangers.  The teams looked to have beaten the weather with an early kick off on a pitch where the grass was really much too long for the good football both sides tried to play.  With a swirling wind the home side seemed a little nervous in the opening minutes which allowed Northwood to quickly open a 2 goal lead with goals from Michael Delasalle and Jack Coburn, the first coming from a cross that Michael was quickest to react to, prodding the ball past the despairing keeper and the second from a corner, Morton Urdal blocking the clearance, leaving Jack to smack the ball low and hard into the back of the net.  Michael went close to grabbing a third when Jack hit a long free kick into the box and Michael beat the offside trap to scoop a header which the keeper did well to save. The visiting team, throughout the first half looked good for their advantage and the half time team talk asked for more of the same.  Despite the conditions the team had looked to play intelligent football at every opportunity, passing the ball around with precision and when not in position were constantly tracking back and snapping at the heels of the opposition.  Alex, Morton, Paul and George were disciplined across the middle and at the back Jack and Nathan marshalled the defence with admirable maturity with Mark and James showing great discipline at right and left back respectively, getting forward when they could without neglecting their defensive responsibilities.
The second half brought no shortage of drama.  Within two minutes the home side had pulled a goal back as the wind picked up and the rain started to pour.  After 15 minutes the conditions worsened dramatically and with the rain turning to hail it was impossible to continue.  The ref took the teams into the changing rooms for a short break to wait for the storm to clear.  The weather improved enough for the second half to be completed, with the home side equalising shortly after the restart to set up the unappealing prospect of extra time.  Both sides had opportunities to win the game in normal time with Paul spurning the best chance with 10 minutes to play.
At the end of normal time the referee took the controversial decision, given the conditions, to go straight to penalties.  Northwood opened up the advantage going 3-1 up with 3 kicks taken and then conspired to let the opposition pull it back to 3-3 after 5.  Aaron Whittingham stepped up to fire the Woods into pole position in sudden death and when the 6th spot kick for the home side went wide, everyone turned and sprinted for the changing rooms with little time for celebration.  The boys should take massive inspiration from this victory, they were playing an extremely good side who have gone unbeaten to date this season.  The last four or five games for Northwood have seen the team grow in stature and with the addition of James, Paul and Max (where did Wayne find players of this ability in the middle of a season?) have played some excellent football that has been a pleasure to watch and that will test any of the opponents in their own division and in the last eight of the Middx Cup.  Well Done boys!

1st Nov. 2009: Northwood 2 Chorleywood 1

The under 18’s red’s progress into the next round of the league cup but were certainly made to work for it. In very difficult conditions, the Woods got the ball down and passed the ball around in their usual style but were unable to create any real chances. Nothwood’s first opportunity came from a corner, Michael Delaselle swung in a cross which was met by Jowl Lambrick but just went over the bar. Paul Foster was next to come close from a free kick but was saved well by the Chorleywood’s keeper. The Woods fell behind mid way through the first half when a long throw in was flicked on for a Chorleywood player to hit an stunning bicycle kick into the net – great finish but disappointing from a Woods perspective as they failed to deal with both balls.
Into the second half Northwood continued to press creating some great opportunities wide but were unable convert when a cool head in front of goal was required. However, Northwood were soon rewarded with an equaliser, James Roche found himself patrolling the edge of the box hit a sweet timed shot into the far corner. Northwood continued to create chances without success, but when the reds thought they missed one great opportunity, where a low ball went across the six yard box came back out to Morton Urdal who hit what is becoming a trade mark strike, flew into the net from 18 yards.
With Northwood taking the lead with 15 minutes to go, it suddenly became backs to the wall with Chorleywood coming close on several occasions but for some great last ditch defending from Jowl Lambrick and saves from Mac Johnston in the Woods goal allowed the boys to progress into the next round.

25th Oct. 2009: Borehamwood 1 Northwood 4

Northwood put in a hardworking performance at Borehamwood and reaped the rewards claiming a 4-1 victory. The Woods coped extremely well in the first half playing against a strong wind by getting the ball down and passing the ball around. Northwood created some good opportunities by getting the ball wide to George Holland and Aaron Whittingham who delivered some great balls into the box but the guys in the middle where unable to latch onto.
Half way through the first half Northwood took the lead. Jack cockburn picked the ball up on the half way line, travelled with the ball before hitting a fantastic strike, which could only be parried by the Borehamwood keeper, for Paul Foster who gambled on the spill to follow up. The Woods continued to press and played some fantastic link up play with Carmine Nisco leading the line well. However, all that hard work was nearly undone with some over playing at the back allowed Borehamwood clean through but thankfully for Northwood, put the ball wide for the Woods to go into half time 1-0 up.
With Northwood having the wind in the 2nd half managed to get 2 quick goals in the first 5 minutes of the restart. The first came from Paul foster who was inside the box on the right side looked to cross the ball but seemed to catch a gush of wind to beat the keeper at the near post. The second came from Michael Delaselle where Borehamwood failed to clear the ball which kindly fell to Michael who was able to tap the ball in.
With Northwood dominating the game, Borehamwood where gifted a goal, a ball over the top (was flagged off side which the referee failed to give) which Will Norris tried to clear but fell to a white shirt who’s shot made it 3-1. Borehamwood nearly made it 3-2 soon after, but Will Norris pulled off a great save tipping the shot onto the post. However, Northwood extended their lead further when Michael Dellasalle was brought down inside the box and Paul Foster stepped up to claim his hat-trick.
With a game coming to a close the boys continued to press creating additional chances but sadly couldn’t convert but running out good winners. A fantastic team performance by all 13 boys involved working hard throughout the 90 minutes and starting to turn results around.

18th Oct. 2009: Northwood 6 Edmonton Rangers 0

The Woods progressed into the next round of the County Cup with a 6-0 win inside 45 minutes. With the opposition only starting with nine players, it didn’t take long for Northwood to a lead - inside 3 minutes. George Holland picked up the ball on the left side, skipped past the right back and with a clear run on goal, slid the ball passed the advancing keeper. Woods extended the lead a few minutes later with the goal of the game, Morton Urdal hitting a great 25 yard strike from goal flying straight in the top left corner.

The next goal came when Northwood were awarded a penalty when Joel Lambrick was brought down in the box when attacking a ball from a corner. Paul Foster stepped up and tucked the penalty away. With only 20 minutes gone The Woods found themselves 5-0 up with further strikes from Carmine Nisco and Paul Foster. After that, Northwood sadly lost their way a little with players not playing the passing game as well shooting from 30 yards when better options were available.

However, the boys did add a sixth before half time when Joel Lambrick rebounded a shot which the Edmonton keeper could not hang onto. Due to Edmonton suffering from injuries they were unable to start the 2nd half. Certainly a good confidence booster for the boys winning back to back games and progressing into the next round of the cup.
