Match Reports 2009-10

18th April 2010: Berkhamsted 3 Northwood 3

Our last away match of the season saw us without 2 or 3 regulars so we had to play some of the boys in new positions for them and they performed very well and this has given us further options for the future.
The match started with both attacks on top and both sides created chances to take the lead. Partly due to the warm weather we did not pressurise in midfield so we gave Berkhamsted far too much room and space. However we finished the 1st  half level at 0-0.
The 2nd half started in similar fashion but chances were eventually taken. Firstly, we had a penalty well saved before Berkhamsted scored following a ball over the centre of our defence but we equalised within a couple of mins through Bobb. Then having given the ball away in our own half Berkhamsted re took the lead.  We again equalised direct from a Glynn corner scoring at the near post. We were now on top a great finish from Sargent with an assist form Eikanger put us ahead. However in the final minutes we failed to clear properly and a tremendous strike from the edge of the area flew into the top corner.
FT 3-3.
There were some encouraging performances from Halligan and Chandanrana in the centre of the defence and again Eikanger in goal. However, MOTM went to Oliver Glynn for an excellent performance up front and in midfield.

11th April 2010: Northwood Red 2 Hadley Wood Rangers East  1

On a bumpy pitch we just did not play our passing game and made it very difficult for ourselves against a nine men opposition who showed great commitment throughout the match. Right from the start we found it difficult to put 2 or 3 passes together and the lack of movement or making the correct angles was also not to our usual standard. Thus we did not create many chances during the first 25 mins. However we made a couple of changes and almost immediately took the lead from a stunning strike from Bobb. For the remainder of the half we were the better side but still lacked that important 1st touch to give us time to move the ball quickly. H-T 1-0.
We started the 2nd half slightly better. Down our right hand side we created some chances. During this period when went further ahead with a well worked and taken goal from Abraham. Further chances were created from our right side with Bennett putting in 2 or 3 superb crosses which we just could not connect with.
Then with 10mins remaining we failed to deal with a Hadley attack and our opponents pulled a goal back with an excellent goal. However, we played out the final minutes without to much concern and gained a further 3pts. In our last 5 league matches we have won 4 and drawn 1 which has moved us into 4th place.
There were only a couple of performances to speak about. Eikanger was again excellent in goal especially as he was carrying an injury but was desperate to play.
And MOTM went to Thomas Abraham for an excellent performance at right back and right midfield.

20 March 2010: Northwood 1 Borehamwood 1

Although back to full strength we started the match very sluggishly and looked to lack confidence as we kept hitting too many long balls and thus just gave the ball away cheaply. In fact our opponents used the long ball with better effect and created the more chances but Eikanger in goal was again in superb form and kept us in the game. Although midway through the 1st half we lost possession around the centre circle and having won possession Borehamwood countered and with a neat finish took the lead. We did create the odd chance and this was when we put 3 or 4 passes together trying  to play the ball along the ground.  H-T 0-1.
The 2nd half was similar to the 1st half but we never gave up in during the final 10 mins we played with 3 up front. This paid dividends as we put some pressure on the Borehamwood defence with a series of corners. From a corner in injury time we created a chance which resulted in the referee giving a penalty. Halligan took the spot kick which he blasted into the roof of the net. FT 1-1.
MOTM went to Denholm Walton with a great battling 2nd half dispaly in the centre of midfield.

7th Feb 2010: Northwood 6 Bushey Rangers 0

The Under U13 Red team produced their best performance of the season with an excellent display of attacking football with some superb passing and movement.
From the start we passed the ball around keeping possession and creating plenty of chances. Glynn opening the scoring after 10 mins with an great strike from inside the Then 2 well taken goals from Sargent  following some great team play to put us 3-0 up at HT
The second half we continued to create chances by playing some excellent football and further goals from Chandaria, Knott and Bobb sealed a very impressive performance.
All round the team there were some great individual performances especially from Kennedy Chandaria,  Halligan Abraham  Sargent and Bobb. However Jamie Tate was voted MOTM for a superb display in the centre of midfield.

24th Jan 2010: Northwood 1 Berkhamsted 0

Our first match for over a month and the boys put in an excellent performance creating numerous chances and playing some good football. We started the match well  with Kennedy, Tate and Bobb dominating the midfield and creating 5 or 6 clear chances of which Sargent took the only one midway through the half. It was also good to see both full backs supporting when attacking and also defending well when needed.  H-T 1-0.
In the second half we were still the better side but not so dominate again creating some excellent chances but our finishing let us done. Our defence well organised by Walton and Gordon kept solid and we ran out winners with a clean sheet.  FT 1-0.
There were some very good individual performances from Walton Halligan Tate Bobb and Sargent  as well as an excellent performance in midfield from Kennedy to be awarded MOTM.

13th Dec. 2009: Northwood Red 3 Harefield Utd 4

A match of 2 halves and then extra time ended is disappointment with a last minute winner.
Having not played for 3 weeks we started slowly and just wasn’t in the match for the first 20-25mins and in this period conceded twice. However, we then got in the game and created some chances. Then from a poor clearance, Kennedy pounced on the ball and fired home from 25yds. However just before half time another lapse at the back allowed Harefield to take a 3-1 lead at half - time.
We started the 2nd half well, responding to some half time words, with Sargent and Bobb causing the opposition problems up front  Chandarana scrambled home from a corner and then Bobb score an excellent goal with a great strike/ chip over the opposition gk. At 3-3 we were on top and looking the most likely to win .We had a couple chances to take the lead but just could not finish. However Harefield came back strongly in the last 10 mins and created a number of chances of their own which they failed to convert. Full Time 3-3
With both teams tiring extra time was fairly even although Harefield looked the stronger side. With less than 2 mins remaining and penalties looking highly likely Harefield‘s left back went on a teriffic run and continued in to the penalty area got to the bye line and crossed for their striker to convert at the near post. With no time left to respond we found ourselves out of the County Cup.
I must also add that today’s referee Niall Gibbons  had an excellent match.
MOTM went to Nikhil Chandaria for another excellent  performance at left back.

22nd Nov. 2009: St Albans Rangers 4 Northwood Red 1

This was a match of two halves which unfortunately turned on controversial decision mid way through the 2nd half.
Woods started brightly and were the better side for the majority of the 1st half. We were very committed at the back and in midfield and with Sargent and Knott causing the opposition problems in attack we deservedly went ahead through a Kennedy header following an excellent pass from Abraham. We continued to dominate and created a number of chances 3 of which were cleared off the line. However against the run of play St Albans broke we failed to win a tackle and it was 1-1 at  half time.
The 2nd half was fairly even and but we started to lose our shape and discipline.
when our Gk Bailey came out to win a 50/50 ball with the St Albans striker,
Bailey won the ball collided with his opponent and for some inexplicable reason a penalty was awarded. After that our heads went down and we became very in ragged , lost our shape and conceded 2 further goals.
MOTM went to Robert Kennedy for a very good all round performance in midfield and full back.

15th Nov. 2009: Westway Youth 2 Northwood Red 3

A great result and an excellent team performance against Premier League opposition puts us into the last 16 of the County Cup. Also having to play away and on astro turf iIs a great credit to all the boys.
After a quiet first 10 mins we started to play our football being very strong down our right hand side. We took the lead through Gordon following a corner from the right hands side. We continued to cause Westway problems down the right hand side and when Glynn found himself in the box he lashed in a strike into the far top corner from 15yds out. However we conceded yet again from a corner when we were out jumped at the back post. H-T 2-1.
We started the 2nd half well and from another corner which the opposition failed to clear and Bobb drove home from just inside the penalty area. We were dominate at this stage and should of gone onto to win quite comfortably, but again we conceded a corner and due lack of communication between our defenders we again let the opposition score at the back post. So with 20 mins left we had to battle to go through and we did that with some last ditch clearances and great goalkeeping. Even though we defended well we still had 2 or 3 opportunities to finish off the game but the opposition defence or GK mad some vital blocks and saves. In the end we deserved or win and look forward to a home tie in the next round.
MOTM went to Ola Eikanger for a very brave and superb performance in goal.

8th Nov. 2009: Borehamwood 4 Northwood Red 2

A much improved performance from last week, although we still continued giving away sloppy goals. We started well and with Walton and Halligan battling well in the centre of midfield and took the lead with a great strike from Bobb. However lapses at the back resulted in Northwood conceding 2 goals. However just before HT we equalised with a splendid team goal. Abraham , Chandarana and   Bobb  linked well down the right to set Walton up with a fine strike from just inside the penalty area. HT 2-2.
The second half was fairly even, but while Borehamwood’s defence held firm Northwood’s did not, and two further goals were conceded. There were some excellent performances from Bobb, Abraham, Halligan, Eikanger and Kennedy. However MOTM went to Denholm Walton for an outstanding midfield performance.

1st Nov. 2009: Pinnacle 7 Northwood 2

A disappointing performance played in what were difficult conditions with a strong wind and constant rain. We started poorly by losing a goal in the first 5 mins. However we fought back with 2 well taken goals from Knott and Bobb. We then played very well for a 10-15min period but then conceded 2 sloppy goals before the break. H-T 2-3.
In the second half we just did not cope with opposition’s main threat or the conditions and the attitude and commitment seen in throughout the season was just not there. Our defending especially from set pieces throughout match is a concern and needs improving.
Scorers: James Knott & Alfie Bobb.
MOTM was given to Nikhil Chandaria.

25th Oct. 2009: Belmont 3 Northwood 6

With a depleted side due to half term and illness Northwood still put a great attacking performance scoring 6 and playing some excellent football at times.
We started playing against the wind but went into a 2 goal lead through Walton and Gordon. We then created a series of chance which for various reasons just could not finish. However Belmont took advantage of this and pulled a goal back with a terrific long range shot.  H-T 2-1
Playing with the wind we then went on to scoring 4 more with superb strikes from Sargent Walton Knott and Bennett. In between these goals was a fantastic penalty saved from Eikanger. Overall a thoroughly deserved win with some excellent performances the pick of them was from Kennedy playing out of position at left back , Bennett after spending the last few days in bed with a virus and Glynn playing his 1st game of the season after injury.
Scorers: Denholm Walton 2, Ben Gordon (pen), James Knott , Jack Sargent , Tom Bennett.
MOTM was given to Oliver Glynn for outstanding performance in midfield having been out since May with a knee injury.

18th Oct. 2009: Kodak 0 Northwood 12

This was a very one sided game which Northwood won fairly comfortably and put us through to the next round of the County Cup. Although we tried to play some football earlier on ,once we had scored 4 or 5
Everyone wanted to get on the score sheet and thus we stopped playing our passing football of recent weeks.
However our two strikers got 9 of the 12 goals which will boost their confidence for the tough matches ahead.
Scorers: James Knott  4, Jack Sargent 5, Alfie Bobb, Tom Bennett, Ilias Kubic.
MOTM went to both our strikers James Knott and Jack Sargent for the 9 goals they scored between them.

11th Oct. 2009: Northwood 3 Belmont Utd 2

Another entertaining game to watch With a great comeback from Northwood. The spirit, commitment and attitude throughout the squad shone through again. Northwood dominated the first half playing some delightful football and creating a number of chances. However, somehow against the run of play we conceded twice. Then on the stroke of half time Walton headed home from a Bobb long throw 1-2  H-T .
Playing against the wind in the 2nd half we did not dominate as much but still trying to play our passing game we eventually equalise through Knott. Then from a Walton corner Bobb headed home with 5 mins remaining. In the final minutes we defended a series of free kicks and corners to record a well deserved victory.
There were some outstanding performances from Walton, Gordon, Halligan  Kenendy Chandaria and Bennett. However MOTM went to Bobb for his overall performance and winning goal playing in midfield and up front.

4th Oct. 2009: Northwood Red 2 Tornados 6

Having lost 12-1 to Tornados 2 weeks ago we gave an excellent performance full of great spirit, attitude and commitment and most pleasing was the fantastic football we played at times.
Woods started well and with an extra man in midfield we restricted the space Tornados  had in the first match. However we gave away a needless free kick just outside the penalty area and from the free kick we allowed a Tornados player first to the ball and went 0-1 down. However we responded well and after a great flick from Walton and then Knott, Alfie Bobb went through to equalise. Tornados then scored twice before halftime. Although at  1-2 we failed to convert another chance to equalise. HT 1-3.
We started the 2nd half well and following a long throw from Bobb, Ben Gordon scrambled the ball home from close in. We then created some chances but just could not finish With only 12 players available and 2 players struggling with injuries we began to fade in the finals minutes and conceded further goals.
One area we need to improve is to prevent giving away goals from set pieces.
However, overall the boys must feel proud of their performances today. There were many outstanding performances today especially in midfield and defence.
The pick of these performances was from Jamie Tate in the centre of Midfield.

27th Sept. 2009: Northwood Red 1 Bushey Rangers 0

Again with a depleted squad of 11 players and with a sub who was not fully fit we battled and fought hard for our first victory of the season. Although we started brightly and with our defence very solid we dominated most of the first half. Although we did not create too many chances and we still caused our opponents problems but went in at half time 0-0.
The 2nd half was similar to the first half and again being solid at the back we started to create some chances. Eventually some good build up play down the right resulted with a superb cross from Bennett and a great finish on the volley from Alfie Bobb.
For the final 10mins we held out to record a well deserved victory. There were some great performances, especially from the back five with our first clean sheet of the season. Both Gordon and Bailey were excellent in the centre of the defence and are forming a great partnership.
Therefore MOTM went to Ben Gordon for great display in the centre of the defence.

20th Sept. 2009: Tornados 12  Northwood Red 1

We only had 11 available players of which one was not 100% fit. So to play one the best teams we have meet in our age group was a very tall order. However for the first 15-20 mins we were as good as our opponents but then some fantastic goals from Tornados saw our confidence drain and we ended up playing for pride.
The attitude and commitment was first class considering the circumstances and we ended the match with 3 or 4 struggling with injuries.
MOTM went to Austin Bailey for another excellent performance at the heart of the defence.

13 Sept. 2009: Hadley Rangers 2 Northwood Red 1

A very disappointing result after an excellent performance. Again we started slowly and gave a way an early goal from a corner. However we responded well and gradually got on top and were the better side for the rest of the first half. During this is period of domination a long throw from Bobb, was headed home from Knott. Although the better side we need to be bit more derisiveness in attack to finish off the chances we created.  HT 1-1.
We dominated most of the 2nd half and created a number of chances but just could not finish off our good football with a goal. Then against the run of play Hadley broke down their left and an attempted cross flew into the net at the far post. During the final minutes we still kept on creating chances but Hadley’s defence kept solid and closed out any danger. There were a number of excellent performances today and the boys should be very proud of the football they played and the attitude they showed.
MOTM was given to our Denholm Walton  for a his performance in the centre of midfield.

6 Sept. 2009: AEK 1 Northwood Red 1

A good start to the season with a well earned draw away to last season’s runners up. Although we started on the back foot for the first 10-15 minutes, we gradually got on top and created the better chances. A Walton corner found Gordon who his shot blocked. Then a mazy run from Bobb created a chance which we failed to capitalise on. Then James Knott having shot wide a few moments earlier found some space in the box and turned hit the ball in to the roof of the net, a great finish. HT 1-0 up.
In the 2nd half we again started slowly and this time paid for this when AEK countered attacked and scored. However we responded well and after a slight change in personnel we dominated the final 15 minutes and could have won when a header from Bennett was brilliantly saved on the line by AEK’S goalie. Then in the final minute Bailey hit the bar from another Walton corner.
Overall a fair result although we could quite easily of won with the chances we created in the final stages. Our defence were very solid today with excellent performances from our Goalkeeper and the back four. There were also excellent performance from Bennett and Knott. We just need to be more composed on the ball so we can get our passing game going.
MOTM was given to our left back Nikhil Chandaria who made some brilliant interceptions and tackles throughout the match, nullifying AEK‘s danger man from last season.
