Match Reports 2009-10

18th April 2010:  Belmont United 4 Northwood 3

We begin a run of 3 consecutive away games, matches that were rescheduled due to the bad weather. We started well but did concede too much possession in the middle of the park. We scored through Simon against the run of the play after some good passing movements. Joe S held play up well, but lacked support in the first half. Lewis Howell gave a good 1st half performance out of position at CB. Belmont scored twice before the break after a period of strong pressure.
We changed things around slightly second half, which gave us more influence in the midfield. Louis Moriarty and William Jones gave us more strength and balance and we soon benefited with Louis Lewinson getting further forward and scoring twice to put us 3-2 up. It was a fairly even game second half, end to end football, Belmont equalised after a through ball split our defence, again marshalled well by Hasan. With about 5 mins to go, again a similar through ball was netted by the Belmont forward. The boys rallied and after good passing movement between William and Louie, led to a corner. From the corner, the ball dropped to Louis M, who volleyed only to see his shot parried by the defender’s hand, Penalty in the last minute of play.
Louie L took a very good penalty only to see a great save from the Belmont keeper.
Again a fine display from Northwood against the team 3rd in the league, great performances from William Jones and Louis Moriarty but MOM Louie Lewinson.

11th April 2010: Omonia 1 Northwood 0

Finally spring arrived in London. It was nice for our parents to finally stand near the pitch without being frozen, soaked or stuck in the mud. Drawn against a team that had an excellent home record we had to be at our best from the start. We had all the early pressure with fine efforts from Joe Slocombe, Simon and Louie L. It was clear from the first shot that the Omonia keeper was probably the best we have came up against, as shot after shot he saved. Our keeper Joe O, also made fine saves of his own to keep us in the game.
From a corner after about 20 mins, the Omonia CB broke from his marker to head at goal, Joe made a great save, but the Omonia player followed up to score. After that the pressure all came from Northwood, our midfield took control of the game with  Louis, Louie Lewis and Sam working tremendously hard, Joe Slocombe put his body everywhere in attempts to win the ball, his link play throughout was excellent, together with Simon, William and Louie they were a constant threat to the Omonia goal.
Half time 1-0.
We had nothing to lose in the 2nd half,  and went for the goal, we chucked everything at Omonia, including the kitchen sink, with William Jones and Louie L flying past their defence many times, but their keeper just had one of those games. Even when Omonia did break through our midfield, our defence marshalled brilliantly by Hasan proved too strong for them. We limited Omonia to short periods of possession, even when near the end they eventually broke, Joe O made a tremendous save. The second half ended as it begun with Northwood applying much of the pressure, on the day, we just did not get that lucky break, we wish Omonia the very best for the final.
Omonia’s manager also complimented us on our spirit and determination.
We’d like to finish by stating although the day ended in disappointment we were extremely proud of all of the boys today, with the effort, attitude and skill they displayed, they were a credit to the club.
