Match Reports 2010-11

20th March 2011: Northwood 2  AEK 2

Northwood hauled themselves back from a two goal deficit to share the points in their first home game for some time. The Reds started brightly, but went one down against the run of play In the 10th minute. A communication problem at the back led to them conceding a second a few minutes before half time, but Josh Simpson reduced the deficit when he put pressure on the AEK defence and went through before slotting past the oncoming keeper.

The second half was dominated by the Reds but AEK defended well, but they couldn’t stop Khye Leung from rifling home from the edge of the box mid-way through the half. It was a really tough, physical game that hopefully the boys have learned from and there were some good performances throughout the side.

MOTM:  Travis Clarke.  Some really good skilful runs by Travis caused problems in the AEK defence.

13th Feb. 2011: Northwood Red 3 Hadley Wood Foxes 1

At home today against old rivals Hadley Wood, and the news was not good going into the game. Severely depleted with 3 boys out, we could just manage to field a side with no subs. Boys were asked to play out of position to accommodate the missing lads so it was always going to be a test.

From the off, though, the Reds looked composed and confident on a very heavy pitch.  Some good moves were developing and it was just the finishing touch that was missing.  It soon came though when Aman Sandhu finished well after good work from Khye Leung and debutant Travis Clarke. Hadley Wood equalised half way through the period with a strong shot into the roof of the net, although it was a rare attack from them.

With Sam Netscher, deputising in goal, giving the defence confidence with his command of the box and his calling, the boys were always on the front foot.  Rishi Joshee, another playing out of position, spraying the ball wide to his wingers Khye and Travis we were producing chance after chance.  From one of these Khye finished strongly just before the break to take the boys into half time 2-1 up.

Second half started with Hadley Wood taking the initiative, but whenever they broke, it seemed they were stopped by a combination of Charlie Laws, who didn’t miss a tackle, or Rishi.  With Josh Simpson, also playing out of position, putting in challenges all across the midfield, the boys were winning the battles, and it was no surprise when Khye Leung rifled home from an acute angle to complete the scoring.  This was a really pleasing 3-1 win, which the boys thoroughly deserved.
Scorers: Aman Sandhu, Khye Leung 2

MOTM:  Rishi Joshee – A really disciplined performance by Rishi, who looked a complete natural in an unfamiliar deeper role.  Also, a special mention for Travis Clarke who made a very impressive debut.

30th Jan. 2011: Borehamwood Tigers 1 Northwood Red 8

This was first round tie of the Challenge Cup away to Borehamwood Tigers in a game that has been postponed numerous times due to the weather. Northwood started off at a fast pace and it didn’t take long for Josh Simpson to open the scoring with a shot on the turn. Josh added a second almost immediately, and Khye Leung added a third soon after. Sam Netscher was creating problems for the Tigers with some strong running in the central midfield role, and it was he who slammed in a fourth from just outside the box to send the Reds in at half time 4 nil up.

The second half started in much the same way, although it was Borehamwood who scored first to make it 4-1.  The Reds then started to take control again and with Sam supplying some excellent corners (the Reds scored from three of them), they cruised through the final quarter of the game.  Aman Sandhu caused constant problems down the right for the Tigers and the defence was superbly marshalled by Karan Sofat.  Another four goals for Josh Simpson and a well deserved first hat-trick for Khye Leung, both scoring with right and left foot and their heads showed the versatility of the boys play.  All round a pleasing display on a difficult pitch.  But praise to  Borehamwood for not letting their heads drop and continuing to play right to the final whistle. MOTM: Karan Sofat and Aman Sandhu.

31st Oct. 2010: Panathinaikos White 0 Northwood Red 2

After last weeks splendid home victory over Maccabi we had another tough away game today.  Away to last seasons joint Red Division winners, Panathinaikos.  The big pitch was sure to suit Northwoods passing game and that seemed the way as the Reds attacked well and created a few early chances with Aman Sandhu and Josh Simpson going close.  At the other end Panathinaikos threatened occasionally, but the back two of Karan Sofat and Sam Netscher held firm.  Alex Marmor between the sticks was rarely troubled but was giving the boys in front of him confidence with his calling and directions.
Mid way through the half, good work by Aman out on the right led to him finding Josh on the penalty spot with his back to goal.  A great lay off by Josh and Rishi Joshee slotted superbly into the bottom corner with his left foot from the edge of the box. Half time 1 nil.

Second half started with the Reds inviting Panathinaikos on which is just what we didn’t want, but again Sam and Karan were tackling brilliantly and not allowing Panathinaikos any clear chances.
The introduction of Khye Leung was causing Panathinaikos problems with his pace down the left, and on one of these forays, Khye beat two defenders out wide with pace and power and crossed to the back post where Samuel Thieme controlled expertly and finished well to double the lead.
Panathinaikos were stung into piling on a spell of pressure but wherever a tackle was needed a Red shirt supplied it, with Sam, Samuel, Karan and Rishi putting in numerous blocks and playing the ball out to create more chances for Aman, Josh and Khye. The young Reds couldn’t add to the score, but were deserved winners.

Scorers:  Rishi Joshee, Samuel Thieme. MOTM:  Samuel Thieme.  A good, hard working effort by Samuel, capped with a great first goal for the club.
