Northwood Thirds Presentation Day

 Saturday 4th July 2008

Season 2007/08 was brought to a close in typical Vets team style, at their annual Presentation Day last Saturday. The Third team (as they are now known) celebrated their elevation within the club from the original “Vets” (a term used when the players were known for their “very old football brains”, unfortunately they came on “very old footballers bodies!”).

Nowadays we have a good mixture of younger and “more mature” players associated with Northwood Third team, which proved to be a good blend throughout the last year. This is probably why the “Vets team” tag has been dropped, although in truth none of us would be any good treating animal ailments anyway!

Again this year, the Presentation Day was held in the familiar settings of Northwood F.C. clubhouse, which provided the informal atmosphere that was enjoyed by all, although the number of attendees was slightly disappointing.

We were honoured by the presence of club stalwart, Mr Charlie Phillips, who presented the awards to the lucky winners.

Last season was a great success (once again), semi-finalists in the league cup and a fourth in the table finish in the London Commercial League Division 4, meant preparations for next season were being laid as the celebratory jugs flowed (unfortunately, the “when I was a good player…” stories became more frequent, as the day wore on and alcohol took hold).

The proud association with Northwood FC was highlighted in the opening speech by the secretary, something that will hopefully remain throughout the forthcoming season. Although patronising the clubhouse on match days has become increasingly more difficult, now that our “home” pitch is in Greenford.

Secretary Richard Doyle thanked manager of the past few seasons, Alan Patmore, who resigned at the end of last campaign. Alan was deservedly awarded the Clubman of the Year Award for all his services to Northwood Thirds. We all thank Alan for everything he done. Tim Delaney picked up Alan’s award in his absence.

Tim Delaney scooped the prestigious honour of  Players’ Player of the Year, voted for by his team mates.

Manager’s Player of the Year went for the second year running to Ben Tacon, who unfortunately couldn’t make the celebrations due to family commitments, but he was another fully deserved winner. Tassles Williams picked up the trophy on Ben’s behalf.

The Golden Boot was won by Lee Heaslip for his grand total of nine goals for the season (there must have been a lot of 1-0 successes last season!).

Then Doyley got the shock of his life, no Tassles Williams didn’t buy a beer, Doyley was presented with an Appreciation Award from Laurie Simmonds, for his services to the Third team during the season.

The new joint mangers partnership of Mathew Wilson and Laurie Simmonds were then officially welcomed and introduced to the players. They take over the reigns for the new season, and we wish them every success!

With next season’s “home” pitch having been confirmed at Birkbeck College Sports Ground once again, those associated with Northwood Thirds know that the football facilities offered each Saturday will again be first class.

New players are welcome for the new season: details of pre-season training will appear on the website and clubhouse notice boards as soon as plans are confirmed. Pre-season friendlies are already being arranged, and details will follow shortly.

London Commercial League Presentation Night
& Vets Awards presentation at the Master Brewer Hotel

 Saturday 20th May 2006

The Vets were finally presented with the Division 6 trophy at the Presentation Evening held at the Master Brewer Hotel, and Captain Laurie Simmonds proudly lifted the award in front of a packed hall.

The season was a great success, the Vets being semi-finalists in the league cup, quarter-finalists in the Supplementary Cup and Division 6 title winners.

The Vets own team awards were also presented the same evening. The following were winners, although after the kind of season the Vets enjoyed, there were no losers.

We look forward to promotion and the new challenges that await us in Division 5, next season.

The following awards were presented:

Golden Boot:                                         Steve Brown (19 goals)

Players Player of the Year:                 Gary Collinson

Manager’s Player of the Year:             Steve Collinson

Clubman of the Year:                           Craig Newman

Appreciation Awards:                           Laurie Simmonds

                                                              Billy Toland

                                                              Alan Patmore

Many thanks to all that helped to make last season such a memorable one for all connected with Northwood Vets F.C.
