Update: 15 February 2008 It seems that a few people are getting concerned at the departure of Wealdstone FC from Chestnut Avenue next season, and the effect this will have on the club financially. I would be happy to explain to people in person rather than on a message board, but needless to say, being Chairman of the club, brings with it certain responsibilities and one of them being to continue to secure the future of the club financially. Of course, losing Wealdstone will have an impact, but it would be foolish of me to hope that something else will just ‘turn up’. Work has already started some time ago to plan for the future and I will make further announcements as and when the time is right to do so. I am aware that Northwood FC existed a long time before Wealdstone arrived and it will continue to do so long after they depart. As a fan, I appreciate the concern shown, however, by supporting the club you are doing your bit; we certainly do not need the continuing negativity shown from some quarters that seems to follow us whatever we do. Since I became Chairman over a year ago, I have always tried to be open and honest as to our club’s situation, be that on the financial or the playing side. I will continue to do this as I feel this is the best way to be. If by not making an announcement right now makes some people question the club’s future, then so be it, but it does nobody any favours. Please bear this is mind when making comments. You may be able to hide behind ‘nicknames’ on the message board when making snide comments, but that’s not my style. Again, I reiterate that if there is something you feel you want to know and it is important to you that you know it now, then please do come and ask me. I somehow suspect this won’t happen. Next season starts in around 6 months time, I have known Wealdstone were leaving us for some time, so please do give the club your best support in the meantime and channel your support on match days. Thank you.

Elliott Update: 8 February 2008
I said last week that I would give an update as to how the Elliott Buchanan transfer happened. As everyone was aware, Elliott’s performances for us this season were causing a lot of interest in the football world and we were aware of the clubs who had shown this interest. Elliott’s record spoke for itself and quickly we identified him as a player whom we wanted on a contract. Colin initially told Elliott of our intentions but Elliott said that he had been advised not to sign one. At this stage, I had a meeting with Elliott and made him aware of what we wanted to do as well as making an offer to him financially. He reiterated that he had been advised not to sign a contract and agreed to have a further meeting shortly afterwards with his advisors. A week or two went by and then myself and Colin then had a meeting with Elliott on his own and made it clear that we saw him not only as a player who could clearly go places, but as one that could also give us a real chance of challenging for a play-off position at the end of the season. Again, Elliott stated that he had been advised not to sign a contract, but he did agree to arrange have a further meeting with us accompanied by his advisors after the Edgware game on Boxing Day. This never happened due to Elliott having family commitments and we did not get to speak again until well into the New Year. In the meantime, of course, Elliott continued to progress on the field and that is a reflection on his persona; an 18 year old who is aware of many clubs' interest in his services as well as how own club making every effort to get him to sign a contract, yet he still continued to produce fantastic performances on the field and his goal scoring never ceased. It was only a matter of time before we had an ‘official’ approach for him, we knew that and one final effort was made to see if he would sign a contract with us, with myself, Colin, Alan, Elliott and his advisor present. Whilst the conversations were open and honest on both sides, his advisor made it clear that Elliott would not be signing a contract as he had never wished to do so, nor had money been instrumental in his thoughts; this is true as he has never caused us any problems on that front. Personally, I had a decision to make, as my mind was telling me to make Elliott an offer he could not refuse, but on the other hand, my heart was saying that if he didn’t sign a contract, then that money he was paid would not be a prudent investment by the club as if he moved away, we would not get a return on it. I guess that it did prove to be right decision as Stevenage Borough had sent their scout, Junior Lewis, to see Elliott on at least 3 occasions and the final time they saw him play for us at Edgware Town, they made their move almost immediately after that game with an official 7 day approach arriving the following morning. In turn, this then meant that Stevenage could not officially speak to Elliott until the following Wednesday, however, with us having no game on the Tuesday, we decided that it would be in the best interests of all concerned to allow Elliott to speak to Stevenage after our game on the Saturday against Witham and also allow him to train with them on the Monday and Tuesday. This he did. As I understand it, Stevenage sat down with Elliott after he completed the 2 days and were impressed enough to offer him a 2-year contract. Elliott duly accepted the offer and advised us of this. In the meantime, I had many conversations with Elliott’s advisor to keep them abreast of all the news as we knew it to be. On the Wednesday morning, I received a phone call from them confirming the fact that Elliott had decided to join Stevenage and to thank myself and the club for all they done for Elliott and to say he will miss us. Whilst this may have seemed the end of the matter, taking into account that Stevenage had no obligations to recompense us for Elliott in any way, I contacted the Chief Executive at Stevenage and put our case to him for some of financial return on Elliott, taking into account the fact that he has come through our Youth System and we have paid him since he made his way into the firt team squad. Further, we showed a goodwill gesture in allowing him to train with them earlier than we were obliged to. I understand that Mr Makin spoke to his Chairman and Peter Taylor, Team Manager, and after some negotiation, we agreed that after an amount that they considered to be their initial investment in Elliott, they would pay us a small percentage of any transfer fee from themselves to another club. It was also agreed that they would have a first team friendly match with us before the upcoming season. Documents have been signed to that effect. I am confident that as a club we have done the right thing for all concerned in this transaction and we now need to move on. I was touched by a couple of our supporters who offered to put up some financial offer to Elliott for him to stay here but it was clear from the outset that financial gain was not very high on Elliott’s list and credit to him for that. At no stage did he make any signs that he wanted to leave right up until he was offered the contract by Stevenage. We wish Elliott all the very best for the future and we all look forward to checking the progress he makes. Of course, to take a player out of our side with the strike rate of Elliott is going to have an impact, but we have scored 2 in each of our 2 games since he left us and we hope this will continue. Tomorrow, we pitch our wits against Waltham Abbey at home and we need to pick up from where left Potters Bar from on Tuesday and add a further 3 points to our tally so far to help us get out of a very clogged mid-table position. There is a clear gap to the top 5 or 6 teams now and each game is a must-win. I hope that this gives some insight as to what happened and when. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Up the Woods!

Summer Update: 5 July 2007 I thought that I would add a further update, this time in respect of the playing staff, as I am aware of speculation that for some reason seems negative towards the club and I need to put this right. It is, of course, any player’s right to leave any club as and when they see fit and when regulations allow. The news that players have departed the club and gone elsewhere, believe me, is not news to us here, nor is it unusual at this time of the season. As we all know, the football world covers a large geographical spectrum, but has a very small grapevine. Whilst we ‘knew’ of the departures of certain players before it became official, sometimes you would be led to believe that the club has no say in who plays here. This is not the case. The first day back training for pre-season tells more than a story. When certain players do not show and haven’t had the courtesy to tell the club they are not coming and furthermore, have starting training with other clubs, this is where I believe that people can take a long look at themselves. A phone call to say that they have departed would have been good, but in light of the way some people conduct themselves, not expected. Let me assure all of you that when the players come out for the first game of the season in August, it will be a team who wants to play for Northwood Football Club. In the meantime, I have no doubt that speculation will continue and of course we cannot stop that, nor would we wish to prevent opinions from being aired. This is football and it always has been exactly that; a game of opinions. The Ryman League have today informed us that fixtures will now be released on the 12th July; a slight delay to their original plans but nonetheless, something to look forward to. Up the Woods !
Ian I write these notes as preparations are well under way for the new season. With it, of course, brings changes and this season is no exception. Ken, as you will see, keeps this fantastic website updated all the time and that's no mean feat. Well done Ken, even if you will see this acknowledgement before others! I must pay tribute to a couple of players who have departed the club recently: firstly, Dave Nolan. I understand that Dave's departure may not have happened in the way either he or the club would have wanted, but as well all know, in football, these things sometimes happen, especially in a game where emotions always run high. Dave played nearly 500 games for the club and this should be properly acknowledged. I for one always associated his name with the club when I used to come down and support the team over the years. I am unsure as to what he will do next in his career, but I am sure that whatever route his next path takes him, it will be successful. From my point of view, Dave is always welcome to the club, at any time, and I extend my personal invitation to him to come back next season, or even pre-season and let the fans and the club acknowledge his contribution to Northwood's many successes in recent years. I will contact Dave and I hope he will accept my invitation. Dave, thank you for all you have done for club and we all wish you every success in the future. Secondly, as has been well documented, Peter Dean has now departed and joined our tenants, Wealdstone FC. Last season was particularly difficult for everyone and Peter was no exception. Whilst he ended up as our top scorer, I am sure he would have liked to have scored more goals. As a confidence player, Peter felt he needed a new challenge and this takes him to a level higher than we will be next season. Again, we wish him every success for the future and hope he joins us in having a couple of beers, as his home games will not be too far away! As Chairman, one thing I am particularly keen on doing, is ensuring that those people who are the mainstays of the club and even those 'unsung heroes' who week in and week out make a vast contribution to the club, right from ground maintenance through to playing the games, are thanked in some way. I still have much to do in this regard, but I can assure you all, that we really do appreciate all the efforts put in by everyone and without you, quite simply, the club would fall to its knees and eventually cease to exist. On the pitch, you will have read that we now have a new Management Team in place for both the Reserves and the Allied Counties' sides. We welcome this team into Northwood and hope they enjoy their time here. Having had the chance to meet them recently, it's clear that we now have a team that are 'singing from the same hymn book' and our policy towards youth will flourish under this new regime, I am sure. We have had to make investments during the close season to both the pitch and also the dug-outs. The pitch, as you will all have seen, was in a particularly bad state at the end of the season, so thanks to Colin Payne, whose company has carried out these essential works, which will leave us with a superb playing surface come the start of the new season, especially if the rain and sun continues the way it has of late. The dug-outs were an enforced change due to new regulations from the FA. We have gone for the perspex type of shelter and my thanks go to Steve Williams, in the first instance, for securing a sponsor for these, which significantly reduced our purchase price, and then of course to the many of you who gave up many many hours, often in the rain, to put these in place. I hope I have thanked everyone involved, though if I haven't yet, I will get round to it soon. Thanks again ! So, in short, we have a new pitch, new dug-outs and even a newly line-painted car park. Hopefully, these facilities will make us one of the best around, so we need your support as much as ever as we try to get back to a higher level of football at the first attempt. I am planning further changes to the way the club is run to make it more streamlined and up to date. This will be done in the official way and I will give more news about this in the future. So far this close season, myself and Alan Evans have been to Torquay for the Southern League AGM, Staines Town FC for the Ryman League AGM, and Rayners Lane FC for the official presentation of the Middlesex Senior Cup. Colin joined us in Torquay for a good night, and really a goodbye to us from the Southern League. In closing, I ask for your support again for the new season, to fans, players, staff and sponsors alike. We needed to take this step back (though not from choice) in order to regroup and go back to basics as a club. I am confident that we will achieve this in time. Up the Woods!
